Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How long does opened dry food last?
- By christine_72 [au] Date 14.06.18 21:32 UTC
Just curious about how long your bags of dry food last you. I have a 4kg bag here, which will last for moooonths. I've read that an opened bag should be used up anywhere from 1 month to 3 months as it will start going rancid.

I store some of my dogs food in a 1kg air tight container that i use for every day feeding, and the rest i keep sealed in the original bag. He eats more raw/homemade than he does dry food, hence why it lasts so long.

Can't help as my dogs are fed 100% raw

No idea as a 15kg bag lasts a month for one of mine.
Maybe use airtight containers or can you buy a smaller bag? I would have thought that a 4kg bag would last a month for a small breed?

The length of time will depend on how you store it before it is opened & after. We buy 3 15kg bags at a time, every 3 months or so but we have had bags longer than that before.

Sue jaw, he gets roughly 80ish grams a day of dry food, and fresh food makes up the rest of his meals. He weighs 5.7kgs. 7mth old Jack Russell.

The bulk of it is sealed in the original package. I refill the Tupperware container every 3 or so weeks. That’s just a guess, as I haven’t paid particular attention to the “bag to container turnover time” lol

I suggest the info on the bag is what I
U shoiuld would folllw. And know v when it's off is next to impossible if it's kept dry..dry food does attract storage mites which many dogs are allergic to. Storing in a freezer will help with those and at a guess increase the time the food remains fresh .
It's been years since I used kibble as now I feed only raw .any bags we used to have were used up within a month
.why not feed all raw and then it won't be problem

According to Steve Brown (Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet) you should make sure kibble is eaten within 2 weeks of the bag being opened, to avoid rancid fats.  If you don't use it up that fast, purchase smaller bags...

I rang Arden Grange when I read this thread and they said 6 months in a storage container.

I suppose the more preservatives is in there (both added and those that came with ingredients) the longer it would stay "fresh". But mites would probably be the issue regardless.

Our dogs eat raw but we use good quality kibble as everyday training treats. We buy these in 1kg packs and once opened put the kibble in tight seal containers in the fridge. Freezer sounds even better idea, I might do that instead.

The freezer was advice from a vet when we were exploring allergies. As I fed raw it actually didn't matter anyway but handy to know

I've heard 3-4 weeks, up to 3mths, so who knows. I guess the manufacture know what they're talking about.

I might play it safe and keep the bulk of it in the freezer.

The smallest bag they make in the brand i use is 1.8kg.

You'll be pleased to know Nugget is having green tripe and chicken giblets for dinner followed by a disgusting chicken foot for dessert , and i have a pot of bone broth simmering in the slow cooker right now.

Probably sounds silly, but i feed him the dry food as a back up/insurance policy, he gets it for  for breakfast in the morning. Plus it comes in handy for when one of my family baby sits him, where he'll get dry and tinned for his meals.
