Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Green tripe how much/how often?

After spending over 20 years being insanely jealous of the pet owners who can easily get hold of fresh green tripe, I have finally found a supplier here in Australia. It has been banned for sale before now..

I gave my 6mth old pup some for his dinner last night and he scarfed the lot in record time, I have never seen him anything so quickly and with so much enjoyment  In OUR excitement i gave him a bit more, i think he would have demolished the whole 1kg block if i'd let him.

What would be a recommended amount for a 6kg JRT pup? He gets dry food in the morning, and fresh at night. Some folks say you can feed it everyday, others say 2-3 times a week... I have no idea how much to give him, he usually self regulates and stops eating when he is full, but i can't see him leaving a crumb of tripe in his bowl.

I can see no reason why your little chappie shouldn't have raw tripe every evening and dry kibble in the morning.

Some will say that you shouldn't feed raw and kibble together, but at different meal times you will be fine.
I have fed raw products on and off since 1978, when ever a supply has been available. These days it's much easier.

He will be fine to have some every day, fresh green tripe is very nutritious for our dogs, it is full of goodness and enzymes too. You may have to make some adjustments with the dry food and feed less.
Try with 4oz daily to start with (this will all depend on how much kibble you allow him to have). Keep an eye on his weight and adjust accordingly. You may have to restrict his self feeding habit and just give him an allocated amount of dry kibble only each day.

Enjoy.

I think can feed it to him everyday, but if you find his digestive system is reacting (badly) cut it back?   The breeder of one of our hounds used to use this and fed it with biscuit meal - this was years ago - and not a complete kibble.

Tripe is known as being good for putting on weight. You can feed it as often as you like but keep an eye on the quantity he is getting each time and cut back on amounts if your pup starts to put on weight. I feed a raw diet to my dogs and usually give a tripe meal several times a week but feed less weightwise for those meals.

Never, ever make the mistake of defrosting it in a microwave - the pong will linger for days
