Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding After Suprelorin

Hi,

I'm new here and just wondering if anyone has an experience of breeding a dog after a Suprelorin implant?  Our dog had a 6 month implant in October and our bitch came into her first season on 31st March.  He did show some interest in her but it's been pretty painless throughout.  I am aware of the reports that it can last a lot longer than 6 months, especially in smaller dogs.  Our dog is about 24kg - Hungarian Vizsla.

My question is has anyone had a sucessful mating after a Suprelorin implant?  If so, how long did the implant last for your dog?

Our bitch won't be old enough to breed from until her 3rd season (that's providing hip scores and health checks etc are good enough) but I am reluctant to give him another 6 months implant if it will affect his fertility in the long run.

Thanks

Sam

Use of Suprelorin is not recommended in dogs which are intended for breeding purposes.

The effects on sperm quality and production are unknown.

Taken from the data sheet:
"The ability of dogs to sire offspring following their return to normal plasma testosterone levels, after the administration of the product, has not been investigated...data demonstrating the complete reversibility of clinical effects (reduced testicular size, reduced ejaculation volume, reduced sperm count and reduced libido) including fertility after six months, or repeated implantation, are limited."

Thanks.  I’ve read the manufacturers info on it but I was more querying anyone’s personal experience.  There must be people that have tried mating after Suprelorin even if it hasn’t been officially investigated.

I guess what you can do now is get him sperm tested by a repro vet to see what his levels are now it's 6 months gone. You can see whether you wish to give another or not. I know someone after the 6 month mark who did this as someone wanted to use their boy and he wasn't firing on all cylinders.

Thanks, good suggestion.  We're not wanting to use him for another year, if at all but as we have a few months to play with until our bitch comes into season think this will probably be our best option.
