Last Thursday my Whippet had us up pretty much every 2 hours through the night with what sounded like farting but in the morning light, lots of runny diarrhoea was found.   I took her to my vet on Friday and he gave me Pro-Kolin, withholding food for 24 hours etc.   He thought, as I did, this was just a tummy upset.     Saturday, yesterday, my Basset started the same thing, only more as he's bigger.   And he won't stand still when emptying so it's being spread from one side of the garden to the other.  I have him on the Pro-Kolin too now and when I picked up more on Sat.morning I bought some Hills I/D which both will eat happily.   Neither is that 'down' and there's been no vomiting, just this awful farty diarrhoea which is 'bubbly'.   I called the emergency vet on Saturday pm re the Metacam he's currently on and was told to take him off, for now.

She's slightly better - not emptying so often and it's now partially formed.  And she's gone through the night since Thursday's need to go out all the time. 

I haven't the faintest idea where this has come from - yes there are lots of dogs in this coastal (SW) town but they don't mix with any, and there's no nasties on the local pavements.   We are not taking them off the property for now.   Does anybody know of anything that's doing the rounds (UK - SW) at the moment because this has hit out of the blue.

That sounds very similar to what my two girls had a few weeks ago apart from the were being sick too. One started off with it and then the other caught it a couple days later. Both were fine in themselves although the 1yr old did have a temperature the 4yr old didn’t. The vet thought it was a bug as a few dogs had come in with similar symptoms, some displaying sickness, others just the diarrhoea. Apparently all the dogs symptoms were solved with the I/D, probiotic and a bland diet (chicken and rice) for a few days. (Although my 1yr old had antibiotics for the temperature just incase it was anything else). So I don’t think it was anything serious luckily, sounds like it could’ve been the same thing as your two had? Glad yours are fine now, it’s always worrying when they have such terrible poos!

Update.   Although Teazel Whippet seems to be on the right track, as is usually the case with my Basset, his 'recovery' hasn't been anything like as fast.    In fact I had him back to the vet this morning and he's had an inj. to stop his nausia (he refused any food this am, probably as well but .....), Parkdale tabs to replace Metacam for now  and Omeprazole caps (new to me but these drugs often are!) and a big tube of Pro-Kolin.   I'm making up some chicken/rice for him.   He's very subdued for him, and has lost a bit of weight.  Perhaps no bad thing but given his fatty cysts, this always takes me to whether one might be a nasty.  He just had a good drink.   Hey ho.

I did a search to see what this drug was for!!    Well as of late yesterday afternoon, he's not had a BM at all.   I suppose that's 'good' although normally I'd be concerned!   I picked up some goats yogurt this morning and gave him a small amount which he lapped up.   He's eaten again this pm and had a good drink so .............. fingers x'd he's through the worst.   But boy has this been a rotten bug.   My vet phoned lunchtime and seemed happy enough with how he is so we just have to let this work it's way through his system.   I may have him do more bloods re the Metacam he's been on.   He did say being on it could well 'delay recovery' from this stomach bug.

Hope he continues to make progress. Just rembered it's a proton pump inhibitor reduces stomach acid

Cough - now he's not had a bowel movement, good or bad, since late afternoon on Monday....... the pain relief he's on rather than Metacam, does contain codeine (and paracetamol) and when I was on this combo. it made me constipated.   What he is producing is VILE farts.   So bad that I had to open the bedroom window last night (he sleeps in his crate in with me).   It's good not to have constant diarrhoea, but now the opposite so I don't know what's going on just now.   He is eating small meals of chicken and rice (which goes everywhere).  And drinking.

Update - Teazel (Whippet) recovered in around 48 hours.   Frankie (Basset) not so much.   I took him back to the vet last Saturday, having had them send a stool sample off and he was put back on Metacam (injection that day) as his stools were finally showing some formation!  The improvement generally (more comfortable) was almost instant - my vet said the Pardale tablets weren't as effective as Metacam.    He is now back on track and his fecal test came back totally clear.  

Whatever they picked up must have been a really nasty local bug.
