Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch being aggressive
- By Mummy366 [gb] Date 04.04.18 11:35 UTC Edited 06.04.18 08:04 UTC
This is my first time breeding  Looking for advice.
She is amazing with children and adults very loving. Then when she comes in contact with other dogs she gets very aggressive.
Will she stand for a male when the time is right? Or isit best to leave her?.
We are wanting to breed as we want to keep a pup

Only dogs/bitches with excellent temperaments should be bred from. Aggressive dogs whether it is towards humans or other dogs should NEVER be even considered for breeding.

Also is your bitch a good example of her breed ? Have you competed with her in conformation or canine activities successfully ? Is she fully health tested ?

You are breeding for the wrong reason if your only intention is to keep 1 puppy from her. Breeding should always be to improve the breed, if your bitch is dog aggressive there is every chance that when your puppy is an adult she will become aggressive towards him/her

Oh goodness... where to start.

Temperament is inherited.  If you want to own another aggressive dog, then by all means breed your bitch.  I hope you will be prepared to take back all her puppies when they also grow into aggressive dogs and their new owners decide they no longer want them.

Staffies are the number one dog given up to rescues.  Please don't contribute to an already overburdened rescue system by deliberately producing more of them - and more aggressive ones, at that.

Sheesh.

Are you sure it's a good idea to breed from a dog aggressive bitch in a breed which already has a bad name for being aggressive?

Please be responsible and don't breed from her, this isn't a case of whether or not she'll stand to mate but that she hasn't got a desirable temperament to pass onto puppies

Thank you for your opinions, like i said i was only after advice on this and had done alot of research wasnt just going to jump into it.
Keesie- staffys are named for being aggressive from back in day when they were bred to fight, they are probably one of the most loving and loyal dogs around.

I'm sorry, no dog (today) should be bred to preserve dog-aggressive qualities.  That is absolute nonsense.  Whatever next, continuing dog fighting to give them an outlet for their natural instincts??

However YOUR bitch is dog aggressive you stated so in your first post ergo your bitch should NOT be bred from EVER. You still want to breed from an aggressive bitch ? Are you crazy ? 90% of the dogs in all breed rescues are her breed or crosses of her breed & of course blue is THE in colour at the moment

BTW the breed was originally bred to fight bulls not other dog(there's a clue in breed correct name) & have always been known as the Nanny dog with people. Sadly YOUR bitch is aggressive towards other dogs & therefore should not be bred from

Please listen to those above.its not against your breed in the slightest many here have staffs and other bull breeds and all.are welcome
.It's about the bitch or dog concerne
not her breed .
If her temperament isn't sound then breeding imo too would be wrong
. I have a dog that isn't good around other dogs  very unusual in her breed
.I stopped showing as I don't think it fair to her or others especially if she did continue  to do well and  I am aware of her issues which wouldn't necessarily show In the ring .no way would I breed from her either.
enjoy your bitch breeding is a risky business anyway
.and if u want a pup buy one from a respected breeder or rescue . To answers your question it is best to leave her and not breed. If she is fully mature which I hope she is  I would have her spayed as wel

My best friend has a lovely staffy who is good with other dogs, but my eldest dog has been attacked by a staffy as well (and never fully recovered, sadly). My point being was just please don’t add to the bad reputation they already have, I don’t have anything against the breed even after a traumatic experience

Yes, they can be loving and loyal but only if they’ve been bred from parents with those temperaments which unfortunately your bitch doesn’t have in that she’s dog-aggressive. I personally think she’d be best off being spayed and just being loved for who she is within your family

well done,  very sensible.   temperament should always be top of the list in required assets a prospective breeding dog should have, its more important then breed, colour, popularity etc.  enjoy  your girl as treasured member of  your family.

As our breed is in media for this fact I would definitely thinking no as temperament and health testing is first and foremost.
