Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / 14 week puppy with worms
- By Spike879 [gb] Date 10.03.18 13:10 UTC
We have just rescued a 14 week English cocker spaniel puppy from an unsuitable home. Poor thing has had a hard start to life.
We have only had her 2 days and have had her down to the vets to get her treated for worms and fleas as well as getting her other injections up to date.
She is underweight but has a healthy appetite, think the worms are stealing a lot of the nutrients. The vet didn't recommend a specific food but I know kibble is attractive to worms, which is what she is on. Does anyone know a better alternative food? Or any natural remedies that will help her along whilst the worming treatment kicks in? Don't want to risk uosettoher stomach further.
Thanks.

> I know kibble is attractive to worms,

I've never heard that idea - if a puppy has worms they will affect the host, whatever it's being fed.  There's certainly no point feeding worms however, BUT did you supply your vet with a fresh stool for him to run a fecal, including a check for protozoa, like Giardia which so many dogs appear to be harbouring these days.  It's normally best to keep a puppy on the same food it's been eating - moving home is stressful enough without switching without doing it gradually.   I'd use a good quality non-cereal based puppy food if/when you do switch, and do it gradually, over at least a week of mixing the new with the old.   Choose something that lists meat, or fish, as the main ingredient.

Your puppy shouldn't need anything more provided she's been properly wormed to include ALL the internal parasites she has.

Thanks Mamabas. Didn't think there was much else we could do. We took her Thursday evening and were in at the vets Friday. They ran swabs but they go to the lab rather than doing them themselves. So will be Monday/Tuesday at earliest... That said we know she has worms.
We used to use pumpkin seeds on some of our working dogs, but she is so little not sure it's a good idea.
She wasn't being fed proper puppy food before, just scraps thrown into the kennel.

Treat the worms as the vet recommends and either get her on to a either a decent quality kibble something  like eden or akela or millies are  pretty good ,  others will have their favoirites or over to raw which would be my choice but depends  on your views.  For the future as worms can't be prevented I would do regular feacals via wormcount or a similar company  to check all is clear. This means u wont have to use chemicals.unless there are worms. Fleas I only treat if we have fleas so to avoid unnecessary chemicals.pumpkin seeds although popular as preventative will not kill parasites

If you know she has worms, then treat her for them!!  Goodness, they are zoonotic (can be transferred to people) and shed in all faeces so you need to treat ASAP.

Your vet has hopefully given you a good quality vet wormer.  You can also buy these online but it will be quicker to get from the vet this time.  Either Panacur or Drontal Puppy would be good.  If you know she definitely has them, I would treat her again in 2-3 weeks time - if poos after that are clear, then you can resume normal worming regime or use Wormcount.

Kibble doesn't feed worms, no idea where you've heard that.  Any food in the gut will feed worms.  Given all the change in her life at the moment, I would not also change her food - keep that the same until she has settled in and is healthy.

It sounds like the vet has given worm treatment which the pup has been given already. I read the comment about pumpkin as in addition not instead of.

Oh good, maybe I misread that!!

If the pup's been treated for worms, I'd treat again in 2-3 weeks and I wouldn't change the food at this time.  Let the pup settle in before adjusting something you can keep the same for a few more weeks.
