Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / should I be concerned.

I have recently taken in an older bitch 4yo not spayed I am hoping to do so once she settles in, I have A 9 month old male different breed not being neutered as showing him, who has never lived with a bitch, he is constantly trying to mount her and lick her bits, she is not swollen or bleeding or tolerating it at all, should I send him to stay with my mother for a while or is he just excited by a female and getting his hormones. we are on day 3 of her being here and he has let up a little but starts all over again every time she goes to the toilet

really don't want any puppies or mishaps happening I don't have much history on this girl so no idea when she was last in season.

Thank you

A urine infection can make a bitch smell very interesting to a dog, might be worth getting a specimen checked.

> A urine infection can make a bitch smell very interesting to a dog,

So can clogged anal glands.   Ditto - in any case, it's always best to have your own vet check a new dog, so you know you are good to go.

I'd suggest all this will calm down - and if she's telling him off, he may well be more likely to listen to her, than to you!!   Dogs who haven't lived with another dog, male OR female, can often get silly like this.   Take them both off for a good long walk - at least that will get rid of his excess energy!!   I'd not leave them together unsupervised, for now just in case she does more than does growl a warning off.

And do you know when she's next due in season - bearing in mind a change like a new home, can upset the normal cycle.   In that, it might be a good idea to get him out of there for now, and get her booked to be spayed while he isn't there!!   Oh, you don't know when she was last in season..... mmm.   Get the spay booked!   At 9 months, he is 'viable' so again, don't leave them together unsupervised!!

I have always found young males especially will get silly over a bitch if they have not got dogs at home. Sometimes bitches can get humpy like this to.

When I have had friends dogs to stay it can take several days to a week for the novelty to wear off, along with the bitch making her wishes known re telling off.

As you don't know when her season is due get into the habit of wiping her vulva in the morning with a piece of tissue to pinpoint the start, that is when they will need separating, with at least two doors and a crate for him or her.

Get her spayed 3 months after her season starts.

"in case she does more than does growl a warning off."

Correction ......'in case she does more than JUST growl a warning off'.   Sorry.

Thank you all for your responses, I contacted the vet who said it's best to wait for her to come in heat then wait 6 weeks for her to be spayed

> wait 6 weeks

That's not the norm...should be longer than that...as Brainless stated previously the best for the dog is to spay 3 months from start of season...this is same as 2 months from end of season.

Thank you I will suggest waiting a while longer then, she has started humping him now so I really not sure what is going on but she is not swollen or bleeding.

I am keeping them separated when unattended for th time being

Chances are it's a dominance thing, but again just keep an eye on her lady bits.

Could she be in whelp? One of my dogs, who was not used at stud, used to confuse the scent of a pregnant bitch and behave as though she was in season.

I sincerely hope not  she is quite podgy but I assume just overweight as can't feel her ribs, she is now on a good quality grain free diet so hopefully get her back in shape poor lass doesn't even know how to walk on a lead

Our vet has this stated policy. I queried it before we got our pup (who was a boy anyway) and the vet told me that the majority of pet owners miss the start of the season, count from the end and phone about the spay 6 weeks after. And as it's elective amd theyre a big practice which does large, small and exotics there's usually a wait of a week or 2 so to get booked in for a spay. They told me they used to suggest 3 months after season and get bitches on the table only about 3-5 weeks from their next season which is okay for some but not for all and not ideal for any. So it could be psychology rather that veterinary medicine  dictating the stated timeframe.

This is why I always suggest 3 months from start as this covers any missed days!!
It really should be the best for the dog, which is midway between seasons but most vets want to go past the timeframe where a bitch may have been caught by a dog(9 weeks gestation) plus if they get false/phantom pregnancy's.
