Dear All,

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi, I am new to this site but am glad I have found it as it is great for information and I have been reading a lot since looking.

We have been making the decision to become dog owners and have been doing a lot of research in to what would be right for us I have been around dogs all my life and would really like to welcome one in to my own family. We narrowed our search down to two breeds of dogs (Rhodesian ridgeback and Duck Toller's) We have recently visited a lady on here with her Toller's so we could meet this breed and see what we thought. We also spent some time with this breed over Christmas while visiting friends in Norway, we are now looking for breeders or owners of the Rhodesian ridgeback so we could possibly come and visit your dogs and see what we think of this breed up close and personal you can only get so much information on the internet.

We live just south of Cambridge so someone close to us would be great, if you can help with this we would love to hear from you.

Many Thanks,

Jenny.

Hi Jenny
I've lived with RR since 1992 - definitely my favourite breed!
I live in Milton Keynes - don't know whether that is too far to come and meet the breed?
I currently have a 6 year old bitch and a 3 year old male.
We also have a group of RR Owners local to MK who try and meet up for a walk every month or so which could be 'fun' (eye-opener) for you to come along to.
Both the Midlands and Northern RR Club and the RR Club of Great Britain have puppy advisers who would be able to put you in touch with responsible breeders who have puppies/litters planned from health tested parents.
Any questions that I can help with please get in touch

I just did a brief search on this website and found the about.  Gt. Yarmouth shouldn't be too hard to get to from 'south of Cambridge'.   There is aso another breeder in Bedfordshire.

And one in Milton Keynes -

Contact the relevant Breed Club and ask for names - again Breed Clubs have Codes of Ethics which should rule out BYBs - much as this isn't a 'popular' breed, so you may not see them, purebred or mix, with a BYB.   Hopefully any or all these I've picked out will be members.  I know nothing of these breeders btw.

Hi Cazcath,

Thank you so much for getting back to me.
Milton Keynes isn't too far from us, just over an hour but always willing to travel especially if it is worth it!
It would be great to be able to meet your RR's the more I read about the breed the more I want one. The group meet up sounds great too.
I work Part-Time and don't work Friday's so can always try and meet up at some point, hubby would also like to meet the breed too so a weekend would be even better.
Let me know and if you would be happy for us to meet your dogs I can give you some details.
Jenny.

Hi Jenny80
How are you doing in your search for a Ridgeback?
I've had Ridgies for over 30 years and currently have 7 so am something of an enthusiast lol.
I would just like to advise you to ensure that both parents of a litter have been:
Hip scored
Elbow scored
DNA tested for the following conditions. One parent MUST be clear:
JME - juvenile myoclonic epilepsy
DM - degenerative myelopathy
I also DNA test mine for EOAD - early onset adult deafness
It can be a minefield out there. Unfortunately there are many people breeding Ridgebacks whose primary motivation is financial rather than a genuine care for the breed and the dogs.
Good luck!
