Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Whelping Kit Help Please

Can people please confirm what They find most helpful in a whelping kit?? I have 2 weeks left and I think I have everything but would prefer advise. This is my first litter from my fully health tested bitch. Many Thanks

I would never whelp a bitch without Dopram V on standby.

And a decent obstetric gel.  I use this

https://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Battles-Obstetrical-Gel-500g/Productinfo/OBS9006362/

If I only had 2 things on standby it would always be these two.

It appears that the dopram v drops are going to be no longer available and will be replaced by an injectable version instead

There has always been an injectable version usually used for lambs & calves, it isn't new

I realise that, but up to now there have always been the drops available for dog breeders. However, I have been told that those will no longer be available.

Who told you this was it the manufacturer?

Lots of towels and disposable bed sheets - they make these for humans and you can line the whelping box with layers of them and just throw away and replace during whelping as needed.

Scales for weighing newborn puppies.

ID collars.

Calcium - to give AFTER the first puppy is born onwards.

Milk replacer just in case, and bottles.

Sterile scissors if you need to cut any cords (you shouldn't need to, but in case)...

A bulb syringe for cleaning out mouths of mucous.

And probably lots more things I can't remember right now...

A good torch so you can keep an eye out for puppies making an appearance when your bitch goes out for a pee at night. "Hot box" for the puppies - a box containing a microwaveable heat pad, lined with blankets in case you have to make a dash to the vets.  Paper and pen to record details of each birth.

I've just rung a different vet from my own and was told it's being discontinued because it's no longer considered suitable for puppies.
