Topic Dog Boards / Health / Luxating patella operation
- By Xchelsx [gb] Date 29.09.17 20:34 UTC
Hi Everyone
My 5 year old jack Russell developed a limp about 3 weeks ago, we took her to the emergency vet as it was late and they said it was her knee.
She started to walk fine and then every now and then she limps and her back leg goes lame my vet has now said she needs surgery for a luxing patella.
Does anyone have experience of the op I'm worried I'm putting her through it and it's not going to help. I want to make myself feel Better that it's going to help her
Thank you

This is quite often seen in small dogs like the Jackie and, provided your vet knows his stuff, should be a comparatively uncomplicated surgery - he'll go in and make the groove deeper.   Talk to your regular vet about it!  I suggest the biggest problem (other than you not keeping to the post-op advice and letting her to do too much, too soon) would be whether or not arthritis has started developing.

I've had several small dogs have this surgery.  In my case I have no regrets and it certainly made a huge difference to the quality of life of the dogs.  In my opinion I would have your girl done as soon as you can.

It does need you to be sure you can restrict your dog - I crated mine for 12 weeks.  Yes - it's a long time, but why ruin the vets surgery.  He might as well not have wasted his time.

Every time I hear people say they've had problems I have pressed them for details.  Without exception they have admitted that they "felt cruel" seeing their dog crated for so long.  I always remind myself that 12 weeks is a short time when your dog can live out its life pain free afterwards.

Be resolved to give the surgery time to heal.  And check that the vet has done loads of these ops.

Thanks
My vet is actually bringing in a speicalist for the op, the thought if it wasn't bothering me but now it's set on a date I'm so worried.
More I think being hard on myself will she hate me I know it sounds stupid.

Dogs don't hate.  And they forgive you for everything, all they ask is to be cared for.

Do you think she will be able to come home to same day

Most of the dogs I've had with this op, the vet prefers to keep them overnight.
