When I look on the selling sites there are lots of French Bulldogs and Boston terriers in colours which the breed standard exclude. Can they still be KC registered?

They are registered as non standard colour, unless they are merle to merle & then they cannot be KC registered for any breed

Years ago now, I had a go at the KC because they were registering Basset puppies with a load of colours that weren't 'any recognised hound colour'.   It's been better of late however.   But any recognised hound colour is rather ambiguous, even if 'hound people' know what that should mean!

Boston Terrier - Acceptable Colours For Registration

French Bulldog - Acceptable Colours For Registration

None standard colours are registered as: "Colour Not Recognised By KC"

However, from time to time The KC will also list a colour along the lines of 'Sable - Not KC recognised' Example here. Not 100% sure but we think it may be because 'sable' was used in the past and before the KC updated their 'acceptable colours'.

Sable is of course not a colour but a colour pattern. It is logical therefore that it is not a recognised colour on it's own for any breed.

For example GSDs should be described as Red sable, black sable etc

It's the same as merle which is another colour pattern needs a descriptive colour to describe the coat colour correctly

Rough and smooth collie and shelties are described as sable and white, but the main part of the dog is sable, with white bits such as feet, collar etc.

Sable comes from the heraldic description of colours & correctly is black/dark brown !!!!

" sable is named for the animal called a sable, which is a very dark brown, silky creature."

Have yet to see a KC reg collie this colour.

This explains it better than me

Well how did all these colours originate?
Yet still fulfilling the KC registration requirements. There must have been outcrosses to get them I suppose. Perhaps from abroad where standards are less rigorous.

Two ways, some were in the breed all along but just considered a fault and as such unpopular but popped up from time to time. Then others were never recorded in the breed before suddenly appearing. These new coloirs often are imported from certain eastern European countires. They likley came about from a cross breeding and lieing to get them registered. You also see the same now with long coat.
