Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding a no kc reg chihuahua
- By Angela83 [gb] Date 10.04.17 00:03 UTC
Hi guys hoping yous can all offer some advice, my daughter recently purchased a 18th old chihuahua.
The night he arrived he got my sisters dog pregnant (she had a litter of 3)(not a planned pregnancy btw)

But since then iv been approached by two others who want to mate with dexter.

The 1st guy has a chihuahua,  so I'm looking advice on what to do before hand, what way stud fees work. Please remember he has no papers.

The 2nd guy has a jack Russell,  so is it okay to purposely Mungral these dogs? What way would the stud fee work in this instance?

Does 'date night' happen at the male or females house???

I patiently await your wisdom

I think you'll find little support on this forum for your question in relation to breeding with a Jack Russel because no, its not OK to purposefully breed mongrels.

Breeding two chihuahuas outside KC might be acceptable providing both dogs are healthy, and there are homes waiting for future puppies. Otherwise you'll find that most buyers prefer KC registered puppies, and of course there are reasons for that. (Just in case, puppy placement in good homes is your moral responsibility just as much as the bitch owner's.)

Usually date night takes place at the male house, as he is the one who has to do the work so it is important that he is not stressed and is in familiar environment, or else he might not want to do it. The way stud fee works depends entirely on your agreement with the bitch owner, some people take the fee on the date of mating, other people wait until the bitch gave birth to puppies. No hard rule here really.

I can't better what monkeyj has written.   Please be very careful about who you allow the male to mate with - the owner of the stud dog is 50% responsible for what he produces, from what quality he produces, to the homes the puppies go to!    It might be 'flattering' to be asked to use your dog, but fact is not every bitch will be 'right' for this dog, conformation/pedigree-wise.   When we had a couple of males 'at public stud' I turned away more enquiries for them, than I accepted, simply because I didn't want my bloodlines mixed up with poorly bred lines.   The income from studs was immaterial.

"18th old chihuahua. "      What age?

ps   If you do allow him to be used, you should draw up a Stud Agreement, stating the cost, and what free repeat matings you will allow.   Ours said 2 puppies only does not constitute a litter and we offered a free repeat, once.   We based this on the Contract the owner of the first outside stud dog we went to used.    And yes, normally bitch to stud dog rather than him to her.   Some people will board a bitch if they don't get an immediate mating to avoid people having to keep travelling.

A number of things worry me . These people who are approaching you are unlikely to be people who know anything about breeding especially zince you have given you have explained you dog isnt KC registered.
Most good breeders would be looking to breed from KC registered dogs. as a .minimun they should  need both  parents to be  fully health tested according to the requirements for that breed not a vet check and would want information on your dogs background to make sure both dogs would be likely to produce healthy pups
Breeding is very risky and costly  both time and money and unfrotnately .I don't  know the motive these people have for breeding but often it is to make money which is never right ..I have been asked many.times with both my toy breed and my gsd if they could be used . Yes it's flattering but i wouldnt consider  it for all.the tea in China . I say just enjoy your dog and dont consider using him to breed.fortunately the oops litter with your other dog worked out fine  but i would steer clear for the future. I am not having a go at you . Obviously you are asking g for advice  i amjust trying to explain why this is not the best idea

One other thing that I'd like to mention is that letting your boy mate with bitches where you don't actually have a friendship with the owner can cause issues....especially as you don't have any leverage with KC registration.

If you decide to take payment at the time of mating, what arrangements will you have if the bitch doesn't get pregnant? Some people can be extremely unreasonable and I've known of friends who've had quite nasty experiences when they've allowed people that they don't know use their animals at stud and there has been no litter. If you chose to wait until the litter is born, how do you prove it was by your boy and that you are owed the stud fee? Without the breeder needing your agreement to KC reg the puppies you haven't got much of a case if they refuse to pay you.

Hi all, I have read all your comments and took all on board and decided not to allow him to be used as a stud.

Many thanks for all of your help on this matter.

Great decision for all concerned.

Breeding is not for the faint hearted and for anyone concerned about the welfare of their stud dogs or bitches, and of course any puppies which are born, it can be an absolute minefield.  So glad you've taken on board the excellent advice from experienced breeders here.

Yet another good reason for not using your boy at stud is that if you were to go ahead he would be very likely to start marking around the house and always being on the look out for more bitches to mate.  Not ideal for owners who primarily want their dogs to be much loved pets and companions!

Hope you and your daughter will enjoy him for many years without all the extra anxiety and problems stud work can bring.

Angela you have made the right decision.  I am  a very experienced owner of the breed and know that once he's "done it" he will want it more and more.  He will start to mark in the house, they definitely cock their legs up over furniture etc.  He's a much loved pet and deserves a responsible owner like you.  Well done for making the right decision.
