Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Maiden bitch - need advice about mating
- By Darmeid [gb] Date 28.03.17 21:32 UTC
Hi
I'm looking for some advice, I have done blood testing with IDEXX and got results today from yesterday sample with a reading of 26.6 advised to mate today & tomorrow  took Bitch who is maiden to stud (who has had one previous successful mating) and it was a nightmare, she tried at every turn to bite him, we didn't let them off to run about together as she was so determined to have a go at him.  We tried then let them have a break then tried again, in the end up the dog was quite hesitant to mate as every time she snarled at him he would back off. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, want to have best chance as tomorrow last day.

Well by her behaviour I would not be taking her back until Thursday .

19 - 31 nmol/L   Ovulation recently occurred. Estimated breeding window 1 - 3 days
32 - 64 nmol/L   Ova have matured, optimal potential for fertility.  Estimated breeding window  0 - 2 days
65 - 90 nmol/L   Ova have matured but aging, decreased potential for fertility.  Breed  at once.

I have recently mated a bitch whobwas saying a very clear no on the Thursday and was eager on the Sunday,  and very keen to mate.

Time will tell if the dogs were right.

So the level you describe would point to ovulation only just occured yesterday.  Ova only mature tommorrow and best fertility Thursday and declining after Saturday.

Never mind the tests - GO BY THE DOGS (especially helpful if the stud dog is experienced).  There's absolutely no point trying if she's being nasty with the dog, and this isn't just her being a maiden.   I'd not allow this to be happening to a stud dog of mine - small wonder that eventually he'd be 'reluctant'!!

I have never had a bitch be nasty to a dog as I have usually judged timing better,  but this time I went for day 16 as that was the day of her first mating on first litter.

This time she was obviously not ready,  when the male accepted her answer of bared teeth he backed off and they even played a little.

In my view we interfere too much,  and allowing dog and bitch to interact will allow the bitch to show if she means no or is merely playing hard to get/being maidenly.

A male will not press his suit if the bitch is not ready,  and it is good for him to learn when a bitch is ready or not.  Too many males are presented with a bitch and expectednto mate her straight away,  abd rarely learn courtship.
