Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Returning pup and refund
- By qwerty Date 17.02.17 19:47 UTC
Further to my recent post about my dog attacking new pup, after advice on here and speaking to my trainer, I made the decision to return pup to breeder after 4 days.

Today I returned pup to a friend of the breeders (as getting to breeders and back is a 2 day trip). The money is/was not my first concern (getting pup out of harms way and reducing the stress levels of my own dogs was my first concern) but I am wondering if I should expect a refund?
I believe that as this situation couldn't be foreseen and because I had pup less than a week, I should have a refund less the deposit/any travel expense)...
Breeder has not responded to me since I gave pup to her friend. I get the feeling she is blaming me but I honestly don't know what else I could have done

Its a difficult one, personally I would wait until the pup was re homed then give you back the money less expenses. In my breed I always have far more people than pups so it wouldn't be a problem but in some breeds it could be. You have done right by sending the puppy back but in reality the puppy is not at fault. So being pedantic I suppose the breeder is within her consumer rights to refuse a refund. Very hard on you though and a genuine good breeder would never do such a thing. I would certainly ring or write and ask for clarification from the breeder on what she is going to do next.

Sorry you said you returned pup today and its a 2 day trip (1 there, 1 back ?). Has the breeder even got the pup back yet ?

Breeder might be avoiding talking to you until they have made an assessment and maybe a vet check as well.

I imagine that she hasn't got pup back yet, she asked me to take to her friends but I've no idea whether she will collect her or make other arrangements etc.
I realise that she might wait to have the pup back herself, that's fair enough. I just wondered whether I was being unreasonable in my expectations, as of yet I've been given no idea of what I should expect.

The breeder may well feel they need to evaluate the pup to see what negative effect it's experiences may have, and when they feel able to offer pup for rehoming will refund you the price less reasonable expenses.

So where is this puppy now?   Still with the person you left it with, or back with the breeder?   I'm afraid I'd have wanted to take the puppy back to the breeder - way less trauma, for the puppy!   That way you could have sorted out what would happen about a refund.

This is indeed a difficult situation - as a retired breeder, and this really only happened once in the few litters we bred, I'd make a refund after only 4 days, but probably less a minimal 'boarding fee' for the time I had the puppy back before it went off to a new home (unless the breeder decided to keep the puppy).   To protect my reputation, I'd always make a refund, especially after only 4 days.   At least the breeder, presumably, got the puppy back!!

ps   So she's blaming you - why?   We all make mistakes and at least she is, hopefully (!?) getting the puppy back.   She may be waiting for you to return the paperwork?

I returned puppy to her friend, I've no idea when pup will get back to breeders, as that's beyond my control now. It was decided that she should be taken to the breeders friend as this was the quickest way to get her out of the potentially dangerous situation with my bitch, as I was unable to make the long journey to her and back for several days.

The breeder has responded to me and said she will refund once pup is back with her, less any expense of getting her back to her. So I'll wait and see.

I'm glad that you have, at least, received a response.  I agree with MamaBas given the short amount of time.

You say that when they had the last fight blood was drawn, how badly was the puppy hurt?
It may be that the breeder needs to keep the puppy for some time to assess an potential behavior problems as a result of the rough few days she had.

It was a tiny little nick, luckily, and pup was happy and friendly with everyone and also my other dog all the time she was here thankfully so I don't believe any lasting damage of any sort. Though I don't doubt if it had continued then there could have been.

Well it's good to have heard from the breeder at last.   I hope it will all be resolve to everybody's satisfaction and the puppy will be okay.   Not a nice experience for any of you but I do believe you did the right thing in getting the puppy out of there, before it was seriously hurt/traumatised.
