Topic Dog Boards / General / Gurgling stomach on the raw food diet - advice please
- By Tania [gb] Date 12.02.17 19:07 UTC
Hello,
I have a 7 yr old black who is doing really well on the raw food diet. Her yeast problems have cleared up but recently I can hear her stomach making very loud noises on a morning and after eating. I have recently added a good probiotic, Vit/min mix and the only other change is that I now use a nutri bullet blender instead of my old basic blender (could this create more air in the veg?). She has normal stools and no flatulance. The veggies I give are celery, dark green neroli, spinach and Chinese cabbage (does anyone know if one of these could be causing it). Any advice would be very much appreciated as she us a healthy dog and I don't want to cause her any gastro problems.
Many thanks
Tania

I have fed raw for years and also have dogs with yeast problems .I do not feed any veg but that looks fine if it suits yours.with yeast I would always go to the green veg and not the higher sugar ones like carrots.as for the gurgling keep going with the probiotic or you may like to consider kefir another probiotic .Also try giving some slippery elm for a while with food.i find it works quite well if this occurs dorwest tree barks is similar and some say better.  you can feed it more or less all.the time but I like to give a break .Its also very good for any tummy upsets both humans and dog.another good place for advice are there feeding fb groups I like barf uk but there are others.firgot to say blitzing the veg should not affect this but if it's only just started worth changing back .U do need to either part cooked or its veg though to help digestion if u are going g to feed veg and fruit

Thank you so much for your advice, I came across Dorwest recently. Sorry I couldn't quite make out your last sentence. Did you say I have to part cook the veg? Also, do you feed any vits/mins? I have got so confused between the Barf diet and Dr Karen Beckers book, she says you must supplement, others say the same but others don't at all? Many thanks

Not surprised it was rubbish lol
what I was trying  to say was that u are right in blitzing the veg as they need veg broken down either by part  cooking at least or blitzing if you choose to feed it.u could safely take out the fruit and veg and see if that helps the gurgles of course
A balanced diet should contain meat offal and bone of at least four different proteins

.In a healthy dog no need to supplement with anything .
also ignore the acronyms they have so many interpretation and only lead to confusion
.As long as u feed  80% meat , bone 10% and liver 5% and then 5%  other offal it  will be fine .Any veg or fruit fed is on top of those figures and no more than 20 % of the days food .
Do have a look at the fb group as I think u will find  being with hundreds of others who raw feed is very helpful especially if u are starting out.of course I am assuming u have fb which may wrong

Thank you so much for your advice you have put my mind at rest. Those are exactly the ratios I have been feeding apart from adding the vits/probiotic. As you have had problems with yeast, would you suggest using kefir over a supplement probiotic and may I ask how much kefir you feed daily? The fb groups, is that bark uk? Many thanks

Fb group is barf uk I will look out for you. As far as kefir goes its really personal preference.i don't find it helped but many swear by it it's easy to grow . I used about a tablespoon but I have large and medium dogs .You can get the grains for free off some fb groups . I have also heard good things about mercolas probiotic but basically using a probiotic is well worth trying .Otherwise I would not add anything else. You can also bathe in antifungal antibacterial shampoos dermacton is good .The vet will give u malesab which work for mine but is quite harsh and doesn't suit all. There are a number of others as well.

One of ours has a rumbling tummy if his food (raw) is too cold. No idea why.

May I just check I have this right. If I feed the 80:10:10 and add the veg on top, no more than 20% of the days food. Does that mean 20% of the total meat/bone/organs, so if I feed 500g a day of meat I would add 20% of 500g in veg e.g 100g on top. Or do you mean the total meal including veg should not include more than 20% of veg. Gosh I never did like maths at school!! Lol

feed 500grams per day of meat offal and bone and then the 100grams (20 %) veg on top :)

You do not have to feed exact quantities every day on a raw diet! A raw diet balances itself over a period of a few weeks. No wild dog or wolf gets a balanced quantity of everything each day
Just offer plenty of raw meat varieties with raw bones, a good selection of offal and your dog will be fine.
Fruit and veg can be offered as a belly filler and will do no harm, (our dogs love their raw fruit and veg whenever there is a supply).
Don't make raw feeding difficult for yourself. I hated maths at school too, and was never any good at it !! Feeding raw is much easier.
