Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Different kennel names

Thoughts on having two different kennel names for different breeds?

I previously had a kennel name that in the name referenced a breed. This has now lapsed as I gave up breeding that breed (long, heartbreaking story).
I now have another breed and so have a kennel name that (loosely) resembles the type of work this breed does.
I am about to get a pup of the first breed, and would like to add my kennel name, but I think it will be a bit odd as it's a totally different breed/group!
Can you even apply for the return of a lapsed kennel name?!
Would it be strange having two kennel names (I don't want to appear unscrupulous!!)

Let this be a lesson to you all - don't pick a kennel name related to a certain breed/group!!!

Yes you can reapply for a lapsed kennel name, although it would still need to be approved. KC journal each month lists reinstated kennel names.

No problem with having more than one kennel name either, KC is quite happy to take your money.

My aunt had lapsed her kennel name which was one of the top kennels in her breed, she was refused the original name when she tried to reinstate it. However she was allowed to have the name spelt with an e instead of an a which means it sounds the same but spelt differently. Makes writing out pedigrees fun!

As to having an affix which resembles a breed...my affix sounds Scottish which was appropriate for my first breed. Funnily enough it is almost an anagram of my current breed and most people think it was chosen with that breed in mind.!

Your lapsed name should be able to be reinstated provided nobody else has been granted that name (or perhaps something similar) in the meantime.   I don't think there is any restriction on the number of names you have.   But I'd imagine the KC will want a fee, for one, if not both!!

I can think of one extremely successful breeder who uses different kennel names for different breeds. But I don't really see the point if you're not going to breed from the original breed again. But that's just my opinion!

I do agree with you about not referencing breeds -I have the same problem. Goldmali = obviously Golden Retriever and Malinois. Golden was my first breed, although I have never bred them. I did have intentions to, but for many reasons it never worked out. I now have no intention ever to own one again, once my 13 year old is gone. Instead I got into Papillons. So the Papillons I've bred have been Goldmali. Which doesn't make much sense if you think of the breeds making up the kennel name, but I decided to see it as just a made up word and as I'm known in one breed for it, don't want a different name for the other.

I do know a lot of people who have kennel names made up of different breeds, without even owning one of the breeds any more, so it's not unusual.

So many people in Bernese have "BERN............." something as their affix. Talk about lacking originality!

Not the easiest thing on earth though to find a name that will be accepted when so many already exists. You more or less have to make up a word to stand a chance.

When you add the fact that there is no co-operation between our KC and other KCs, it makes choosing a name even more difficult.   We had a registered affix in Canada which related to the town (Roman name) where we'd lived before going out there.    I knew this affix was in use in the UK, in another breed however (but hadn't really intended to be back in the UK) so inevitably, when we came back and talked to the KC, we weren't allowed to use that name, even with some additional letters added.   I did approach the people with the same affix as they were no longer active to see if they'd let me have their affix.  They said no, but 'maybe for a four figure sum' !!!    We chose another name, but have never, to this day, thought of ourselves as other than our original Canadian affix.    And of course, the two names are in our pedigrees for future so-minded researchers to work out!!    Those hounds we came home with were registered with the original name.

Very true!  I wanted my affix to be the same as one I used for 25+ years with showing cavies.  I was refused, yet I have never been able to find anyone using a similar affix.  So I half heartedly made up some names, and put in my application.  I know that what I was given, was nowhere near the top of the list.  It was just a jumble of letters, that, to me, was not actually a word.  Years later I found out that it was a word - it is the name of an Amoeba!!

So be careful!
