Topic Dog Boards / General / Average cost of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppy?
- By kennytango [gb] Date 05.12.16 16:39 UTC
Hi all,

Me and my wife are looking to buy a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy sometime in the next year. Just as a house pet, not for show or breeding whatsoever. I've been doing my research about the Corgi breed and have been watching endless videos on do's and don'ts, tips and tricks etc on raising a Corgi. We're both really excited when we do eventually find one we like and not rushing into it buying the first one we see.

I currently live in South East London area and have been looking around and only started to contact some breeders about the cost of a puppy (still waiting on some to get back to me). I like to get a rough idea how much it cost for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy?

One breeder has asked for a price of £1000. Is this standard from a breeder?

Thanks.

As always, contact the relevant Breed Club and ask.   My breed, I noticed recently, has just broken the £1K barrier, with somebody asking that for male Bassets, and £1200 for females.   Whether they get that is another matter!   And I was told people pitch their prices high these days, expecting to be 'bartered down'.   This is NOT something I'd ever subscribe to.

Don't shun a 'show breeder' - if you find one who only produces a litter occasionally, for their next generation, they won't all be 'show quality' but will make excellent pets, with the benefit of getting all the breeder puts into selecting a suitable mate for their bitches and rears them properly so they do produce a good one, or two, to keep themselves.

Show dogs are pets whose owners or breeders choose to show them.

A litter bred with showing in mind will likely be most typical to the standard.

Also many people who show never had any intention to do so,   but got so interested in their breed,  they decided to give it a go,  and having a well bred one certainly gave them a better start.

All puppies in a litter are normally the same price as they have cost the same in time,  love and money to rear.

The breed clubs will give you an idea of how much well bred pups are going for,  but up to a £1000 doesn't sound to far out.

I was talking to some named top breeders at working and pastoral breeds of Scotland 4th November and the topic was puppy prices and the amounts people are charging and the idiots paying it.  The two people have both judged at Crufts and had breed record holders winning up to championship groups and BIS and R BIS. Placements and they were saying around 800 from them, people are charging more and people are paying it, both live down south one Wrexham the other Herefordshire here is the welsh corgi league Secretary's number her name is Margaret Hog garth 0191 5294118 she can help you more I hope this helps.

To put in to context the last litter I bred six years ago at twelve weeks of age were 650 and were microchipped and had both puppy shots they came with a contract, diet sheet and food for a week.

Most showers in this breed only breed when they want a puppy but be careful we do have a few puppy farmers out there

I'd contact the breeds clubs they should be able to give you a rough guide and recomend some breeders.
I've seen a litter advertised at £1200-£1300.

You say you have contacted a few breeders to ask about prices and are still waiting replys. Was it just a short email asking about prices? As Alot will depend on how you worded the email, many breeders will be put off when some one either only asks about price or asks very little as well as price. So an email like "hello, have you got a litter due, how much will a puppy cost" May not get a reply from some breeders where as one giving more info about you and your lifestyle can make a huge difference.

This is why, despite this being the e-mail age, I much prefered to talk to a prospective new owner than just receive an email which tells me nothing.  And even better, meet the new owner face to face.   In fact much of the time I wished we could have kept ALL the puppies we bred :grin:    For some strange (?) reason, I didn't have this feeling with my Canadian-bred litters.   Whether this was a country-thing, or just a reflection on how times change, I don't know.  But finding good homes was perhaps the worst part of doing the occasional litters we had

I was definitely polite in my emails as I introduced myself first and asked if the breeders had any litters on the way. Also explained my circumstances after and the environment I live in aswell as the open area the dog can walk/play when it grows up. Only then I apologise for asking and ask for the price.

Thank you for the responses everyone, it seems like the rough price is around the £1000 mark.
