How I hate all this 'unknown' or 'inconclusive' - try this try that'.    I urge you to ask your vet to do a swab, culture and identification so at least you get the right antibiotic/drops to put in the ear.   Anything that isn't right just makes a nice moist breeding ground for bacteria to grow.

At the end of the day, there is a surgical procedure, aural resection, that can be done, but you shouldn't have to resort to that.

And yes, it could be down to an allergy so making sure you are using a food that isn't cereal-based would be a good idea.

I agree with the above (good advice).

It could be fungal if all usual meds have failed.
A swab culture for that could be tricky as fungi takes a very long time to grow.
Vet can prescribe antifungals in any case.

Hear, hear!  Back to the vet for a culture and ask them why they didn't do that in the first place, assuming it hasn't of course.

If that comes back clear, then you can look at allergies, in which case it'll most likely be a matter of doing an exclusion diet, which again your vet can guide you through.

Completely agree with the advice to have it cultured. One of my boys had - suddenly - a terrifically smelly waxy ear.  First pass broad spectrum antibiotics did nothing, culture showed that two bacteria and a fungus were involved.

Thornit did not touch it until the ear was clean (which took several weeks as it kept recurring), including removing all exudations in the hair of his (pendulous) ears and washing the flap with very dilute Hibiscrub or Malaseb. Frequent use of veterinary ear cleaners made the ear quite sore, so a lot of the cleaning was done with olive oil.

Now I use Thornit weekly in both ears and (touching a whole forest here) it has not come back.

I never do understand why swabs arnt taken sooner in many cases. Mine were swabed  after the second reoccurrence of infections and this led us to have a referral to a dermatologist where we discovered  she was allergic to a number of things including at least two yeasts.being impossible to remove those permanently and the fact that the slightest exposure Leads  to another infection we now use immunotherapy therapy with topical treatment if there are any breakthrough reactions.immunotherapy not being a 100% cure. In our case we were head to an airalmresextuin in both ears aa the infections had got serious so fast . Now she still has intact ears and is happy again
