Topic Dog Boards / General / BBC News: "100 imported puppies rescued"

"100 imported puppies rescued at Holyhead Port by RSPCA. Almost 100 puppies have been rescued at Holyhead Port on Anglesey as part of an operation tackling illegal animal importation. The various breeds arrived in vans on two separate ferries before being intercepted by Border Force on Tuesday. The puppies, most just six or seven weeks old, were travelling in "filthy" conditions. The RSPCA said to "unscrupulous dealers, these young pups are nothing more than a cash bonanza". The charity has labelled the incident as a "shocking example" of the scale of the puppy trade. After being inspected by a vet, the puppies have been transported back to Ireland where they will be cared for by the RSPCA before being re-homed. The breeds included beagles, basset hounds, labradoodles and Pomeranians". Article HERE

There was a similar incident of 69 puppies hidden behind bales of sawdust.  Tip of Iceberg as loads must get through.

When the Irish were bringing in some sort of regulation to commercial dog breeding the Puppy farm spokesman said that nearly half a million pups a year were bred for export to the UK.

You cant honestly think they are now happy to keep pups to 16 weeks and pay for Rabies vaccination and Pet passports.

Pups at 16 weeks are well past the cute sage, not to mention the cost of keeping them fro an extra 8 weeks when they eat the amount of an adult.

The dealers and pet shops don't want them that old either, much harder to sell and look after.

Seeing there were Bassets involved in this I almost daren't look.   But I did.   Terrible.   Obviously this is to feed the Christmas trade.   I just hope they can all be found decent homes although how they will be after such a traumatic start in life, is anybody's guess.

I suppose all we can do is continue to try to educate the buying public about seeing mum with her litter and meeting the breeders etc.etc.  And NEVER to buy from a Pet Shop or from somebody professing to be a breeder, but with multiple breeds of puppies.

Why send the puppies back to Ireland however??   More trauma!!

Because in England 19,000 animals will need rescuing this winter.
