Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Mum not cleaning puppys bums
- By rottiedogs [gb] Date 21.11.16 21:30 UTC
I have never experienced a bitch not doing the cleaning properly so am a bit worried when I checked all pups over tonight I noticed there bums were all dirty and had hard poo on them, I have cleaned them up best I can as they were crying and my bitch was not happy, she is cleaning the pups and feeding them but she is obviously not doing there bums.

What is best way to encourage her to do it and how often and with what is best to clean them until she starts doing it.

I have had this, once or twice, but within a couple of days the bitch gets the hang of it, I the meantime I use babywipes (sensitive lidl ones) and show her the pups bottoms.

We keep these wipes at home for dogs and grandchild and just did the pups they are all settled and  sleeping now mum watches me the whole time

How often would you do this ?

Thank you

my girl never did them so I had to do them until they could go themselves, I spoke to a few other people and it can be quite common on a first litter.
I did it after each meal time.
get yourself boxes of baby wipes in if she decides she's not doing it

To get them interested I put a dab of honey on each bottom, mums love that. Do this repeatedly even holding each pup in turn for her to lick.
This has always worked for mine but one friends bitch NEVER cleaned bums, considering it too disgusting...it as a Rottie bitch with 11 puppies.
Once you start with the baby wipes the bitch will never lick them.
All scent of them must be masked before she will lick again

We had one, a real prima donna, who would pee her puppies, fine.  But she'd have NOTHING to do with the other, well beneath her, to the point that litter all had such a hard time.   They were groaning and try as I could with wipes, cotton wool, you name it, most of the time unless gravity intervened, they were clearly constipated.   I'd be sitting them in warm water to see if I could stimulate them to produce.   Thankfully eventually they were able to help themselves.   I only ever took the one litter from that bitch - the other thing that drove me nuts with her was her wanting out of the box but once out, after the puppies had all fed and settled down, she'd stand outside the box and squeak at them, waking them all up.   The poor dear was clearly divided between being a mum (and generally, overall she was a good one) and not wanting to be a mum.   She did give me a good litter, 2 of which we kept and one went on to produce what was probably our best ever litter.  But the getting there wasn't seemless.

Yes honey dabbed on will encourage her to lick them properly clean, I think I just used a cloth with warm water when my last litter hadn't been properly cleaned once. Mind you this current litter are the cleanest in Suffolk thanks to the grandmother going in to help wash every opportunity she gets!:lol:
