Hi all my pups are a week and a day old and I know I need to start worming and fleaing them at 2 weeks old , do I need to get the vets involved or can I buy the stuff for puppies this young?

Never use flea stuff on any of my dogs or puppies(as they just don't get them).
You don't need to involve vets with wormers, choose your brand & buy it where you like.

I use Drontal on pups, others use Panacur. No need to treat pups for fleas unless they have them.
Where can I buy this from
choose your brand & buy it where you like.I'd be a bit cautious with that. There are over the counter pet shop style wormers that can be ineffective and/or outright dangerous. I would only go for the brands that vets and the online pet pharmacies supply.

What I meant was you don't have to get from the vets but it can be purchased at places like Pets At Home etc & without me mentioning any particular name of wormer like Panacur etc....

They still sell the poor quality brands. They are only allowed to sell the vet brands if kept behind lock and key and a trained person has to assist you -you cannot take it off the shelf yourself, unlike the other brands. I can't remember what the category is called now. If you buy online you must give details of the animals you are wanting to treat. So just by going to PAH does not mean you are sure to get a good quality brand. In fact I once went there when in a hurry for something and as the only person they had qualified to sell it wasn't in, they could not let me have the wormer I wanted even though it was in stock.

I only buy 1 brand in PAH which is locked away, so wouldn't look for any others....hence not thinking of things you have mentioned in this paragraph. My adult wormer I buy online anyhow & both the brands are not 'just off the shelf'.
Was only trying to help answer a question
In all the litters I have had I have never used a flea treatment. Always use Panacur from 2 weeks ( and in pregnancy). Worm 3 times before leaving but will later use a tablet from vet.
Think they gave me milbemax for the last worming last litter.
I never used a combined wormer/flea treatment for my older dogs. Just one step too far for me. I do not routinely flea treat but I am dog groomer and my dogs come to work sometimes so have bought a flea home. The I use Frontline Combo and it works a treat.

Like Hazenaide I use Panacur on my pregnant bitches from day 40. That way pups are going to be 98% worm free when born. When you dose the litter with Panacur 10% it will be for 3 days (then every 14 days after.) The bitch will be dosed for one day at full adult rate. Pups dosage is very low.
I get my Panacur from www.hyperdrug.com.

Out of curiosity, do any breeders do Wormcount rather than worm their pregnant bitch? I don't know how this would work once pups are born but I think that if the bitch is worm free the pups would be too, so no need for any wormers all round.
Fleas and ticks, being external, can obviously be seen and treated if required.
Was only trying to help answer a question I just wanted to warn, having had a cat have a stroke after being wormed with petshop wormers and knowing lots of similar cases -not all wormers are the same hence the different legal categories they are sold under. No issue with you, just think it's an important fact to point out.

be careful to make sure that the panacur or drontal is for baby puppies as the normal wormers for dogs aren't suitable for them.
As for flea treatment I wouldnt even consider this unless they have fleas.
If you go to the online pharmacies you should be able to pick up the wormers there or the vets will have them.

Pregnant bitches pass on through pkacenta and milk the reactivated larva encysted in their tissues. So worm count would not pucj these up.
If the bitch has not been wormed in pregnancy with a wirmer that acts on lsrval stages (Panacur, which is Fenbendazole) then it's a given that pups will have a toxocara burden, as the life cycle is linked to the bitches reproductive cycle.

We'd worm our puppies using a gentle worming syrup, from 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks to the time they went home. Mum was wormed before being mated and again when we first wormed the puppies. Our puppies didn't have fleas so they weren't needing to be treated for them.
The worming syrup we used was Sherleys.
No mine don't have fleas I just thought they needed worming and fleaing from 2 weeks , can I buy worming stuff from places like pets at home ? Or where can I buy it online

You could and for sure, I bought Sherleys online, BUT much of wat you can buy otc, or online, may not work. You woul be safest to contact your vet and buy from him. There's no point treating for fleas if they are not there!! Again if you see any, talk to your vet before you do anything.

Anything bought from an online pharmacy like Hyperdrug WORKS and is what Vets buy.
It's the old over the counter syrups that have minimal effectiveness.
Your choices for pups will be Panacur or Frontal puppy.

bought my Pancur 10% from a local horse merchants as I knew that they were qualified to sell SQP products.
Because as usual I was last minute, I asked my vet knowing it would be dearer and they had no stock. Got it from the horse merchant that day, about £8 cheaper than vet anyway.
I would not use anything else for my puppies.

You can buy Panacur 10% from any online pharmacy (I use Animed) without a prescription, and it arrives within a couple of days.
