Is this normal , we THINK she's 62 days at the ultrasound our vet said our due date was about right , well over the last 24 hours or dog won't leave our bitch alone! Even trying to mount her, clearly I keep pulling him away from her , but most of the time she warns him away anyways , is this normal ?

Could she have an infection?

I imagine some males may be a little confused by the smells coming from a bitch in early labour, or when the mucus plug is lost.

Is he an entire male dog that knows what's what, or  one with his hopes up, thinking any port in a storm.

It's high time you split them up -the bitch will want to be alone and have peace and quiet when whelping and for the first 2-3 weeks.

I'd have to totally agree with this.    She should at least, be sleeping in her whelping quarters, with somebody in with her overnight so if as so often is the case, she starts in the middle of the night, she can be monitored.    If she's not away from him, and asap, she won't settle to her job and once the puppies are born could well turn on them in a misguided attempt to protect them.   We had our bitches in late pregnancy completely away from the rest so there was none of this going on at all.

I hope there's no infection there - and I might think about whether her anal glands are not as they should be - when there is impaction of infection in that area, it can be of huge interest to males.

I'm not sure why you don't know how far along she is - count 62 days from the first mating, bearing in mind conception may not have taken place immediately.   You do need to know so you don't let her go over by more than 2 days from her due date, without involving your vet.

They are sleeping apart , she has her own bed and our dog is in crate on a night or when I'm out
