Topic Dog Boards / General / Change of diet - constipated and crying now
- By peppe [gb] Date 16.08.16 14:22 UTC
I changed my dog food a couple of months ago to nature's diet chunks he then went of it so after trying for a couple of days of taking it up i decided to give him mince tripe which he loved but he didn't go to the toilet for  3 days and then kept crying because he wanted to go so I decided to put him back on the chunks he continued to cry trying to go and the following day he did a bit loose then after that was passing firm stools but as continued to cry when going and running along going my friend said he might be tender inside as was obviously constipated he seemed ok yesterday but this morning cried again and running while going any suggestions before I rush down the vets

First if u are changing to raw you will need to do research. The best places I have found to help are fb groups if u have other wise books like the dogs dinner by Ann Ridyard. What else has he eaten a part from tripe since he last pooed ? How long since  he did a comfortable proper poo. tripe alone doesn't usually cause constipation .has he had  bone at all as this is usually the problem particularly if he isn't used to it. Pysluum husk powder mixed  with lots of liquid is very good for constipation.is he still drinking and behaving normally and no vomiting as I am concerned about blockage not from tripe though if it's pure tripe.

Feeding raw is unfortunately not as simple as throwing raw meat into a dish. The balance has to be right and then you have to tweak it for your dog. I think you mean Nature's menu chunks you used? Which chunks were you giving?

Anything boneless like tripe will loosen the poo not make it harder, which is why I ask what else you've fed.

Not going to the toilet for three days and then having problems is not good. I would recommend putting your dog on a complete mince for now which has everything he needs in the correct balance. Look at brands like Nutriment, Natura Instinct and Paleo Ridge for these.

Yes he was on nature's menu chunks either beef chicken lamb fish alternate every bag and 4 of there mixer chunks and an occasional ducks neck he is full of energy and drinking and eating the problem didn't happen until he stopped eating i thought he had just gone off it so thats why I gave him the mince tripe which seem to make him loose he is now back to normal poos just so uncomfortable passing them

Try some psyllium husk powder but if things don't improve u will have to see a vet. As tectona says tripe alone won't cause  constipation. The other thing is add some other boneless meat or a very small amount of liver no more than 5℅ for now just don't do all these things at once. For completes paleo . And the dogs butcher completes are excellent you get the proper mix and nothing g extra and the correct ℅ too start things off. As a further thought if he was fine before except going off his food this could be nothing to do with the tripe but something else so don't leave too long before vet check

Decided to go to the vets don't like to hear him cry out strange thing once he has poo he is fine happy as Larry for the rest of the day

I think u are right I am sure it's not tripe if he isn't having bone as well and the fact he seemed to go off his previous raw is a concern. Does have recreational bones at all

Going in on Thursday to be thoroughly checked out

That's good Pepe, he shouldn't be crying when toileting, changing to a raw diet can cause the runs or a longer time until going to start with, as can any food change until used to it, but then going to the toilet should not be painful.........I would absolutely be at the vets.............let us know how he get on.

Have you checked his anal glands? If he's crying as he needs to go possibly they are full and sore?

Mine is on nature's menu nuggets (also various flavours, rabbit today) for breakfast and orijen with Lily's garden for supper. Nature's menu tends to make him looser, not constipated. In his case this settled after 2 days. There are some he likes better than others though - did he "go off" the lamb? Mine doesn't like that much, I think it's the herbs they've put in it, it smells different to the others.

Peppe, are you monitoring how much your dog is drinking? If he is constipated, he may not be taking enough fluid in. Keep a close eye on how much (or little) water he is drinking. If it is minimal, see if you can get him to drink more.

to improve drinking either make some bone broth or add water to his food

He has  been diagnosed with an evasive growth in his bowel on soft food but don't think he will go much longer i am heart broken never expected this

I'm so sorry that you've had such a sad diagnosis. Not something I'm familiar with, but I hope things go as well as they can for you all. Such a shame.

I am sorry this must be big shock.  Hopefully ur vet will be able to help u keep him comfortable  with palliative care if it's not operable

My 8 year old Beagle was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis just over three years ago. At that time I was told that these dogs usually went on to develop bowel cancer. However, in his case, he went on to develop recurrent but non-malignant bowel tumours. He had to have three bowel operations last year, the last one  being on the 23rd. Dec., when my vet said that she had now done all she could. To do any more was to risk leaving the bowel wall too thin, or the dog becoming incontinent.
We were devastated, but amazingly he is still with us and, fingers crossed, he has not needed any operations this year - in fact, although he isn't 100% fit, (he is also hypothyroid, another auto-immune complaint), he competed in obedience only last week, and behaves absolutely normally at exercise. My vet had resisted using medication, as the only suitable drug was likely to cause dry eye, but when we reached the stage where there was nothing to lose, she put him onto Sulphasalazine. Yes, he has developed keraconjunctivitis lately, but eye drops can keep him comfortable; and yes, he does occasionally look at his rear end as if it is prickling, but it is has bought him  a minimum of eight months of quality time, and I'm grateful for that.

So sorry.
Could you try feeding arden Grange appetite plus. It's in a tin and very much like chicken soup. My boy when he turned his nose up at most things after he was diagnosed with cancer in his stomach, lungs and spleen but liked thus because of its form.

I have put him on nature's menu pouches as he was on theirfresh hopefully the change as same company will not upset him to much

Up date on Toffee he has settled very well on the Natures Menu pouches no up set tummy and back to his old self if not better wonder now if vet made a mistake as he doesn't cry anymore when passing a poo and is always on the go, glad in one way if he has, annoyed in another as he could have been put to sleep on put through a operation un-necessarily.
