Can anyone point me to info on show bred irish setters and field trials please.
I can find info for field trials and for the breed clubs, but no place where they cross over with examples of show dogs taking part in the trials. I am wondering if its even possible to do FT with a show bred irish?

Also, as a second Q, does anyone know where I can find the info on whats needed to be a dual ch?

Show Irish Setters can definately be trained for field trials. There have been several in the recent past that qualified in the field and became full champions. Interestingly, all bitches. Ch Greyrigge Finuala, her litter sister Ch Greyrigge Fidelma and most recently Ch Copper's Wine  n Roses who is still in the ring now. If you contacted The Irish Setter Association England, they would tell you where their next trial is to be held. You just missed one a couple of weeks ago and there were show bred Irish competing.

Oh, there is undoubtedly a feeling that show dogs are less capable in the field but with the correct training and  determination by the owners, show dogs can do it. The fact is though that there is very little cross over between the two diciplines mostly due to the lack of interest in doing so, by the owners. The breed is very split, show bred Irish have a very different look to the field bred ones, but some of the breed clubs offer classes for working bred dogs at their shows. Few working bred Irish have show success and few show bred Irish have working success.

Have you considered the Irish Red and White Setter? They are very much a dual-purpose breed.

One of the pluses of the reds is a local breeder and visually I am less keen on the red and whites  but I will have a proper look into them :)

The red and white is the older dog, the Irish is bred from it.
