Topic Dog Boards / General / Pongy cool coats / mats!

So I've got a cool coat and a cool mat for the dogs, but I can never remember which ones you squeeze out to dry in between uses and which ones you just leave in a sealed bag, and in any case I'm not very good at squeezing them out very thoroughly, and they've often got grass or dirt on from wherever we were when I was using them. So they've got a little pongy, sort of stale water / grass smell. How can I wash them to get them smelling fresh again?

someone told me the Dettol antibacterial stuff you add to the washing machine.

I have both a cool mat and a cool coat, but I wonder if they are different to yours.

The cool mat is a bright blue plasticy rubbery sort of material which has a gel inside that when compressed, like when a dog is lying on it, becomes cooler. I have a lovely picture taken yesterday of my GR lying on her back on the mat in order to have a cooler tummy as well as her back.

The cool coat which I used on my previous dog when she was older and had a heart problem, is made of a material not dissimilar in feel to chamois leather which I soak in water, wring out so that it doesn't drip, then put on the dog which kept her cool for three hours roughly, but of course, it could easily be re wetted. After use I would leave it out to dry thoroughly before storage. It will then go quite stiff feeling, but went back to being supple once immersed again in water. I never left it stored damp.

Mine have been wearing their cool coats today and I was just thinking the very same thing.....how to get rid of the mildew smell.? I'll give the dettol thing a try. Good idea, thanks.

when I cleaned mine I used a bit of the F10 disinfectant I have for the budgie/mice. I wetted it and misted it over with the f10, left it a few hours then rinced it off

I just washed mine in the machine with biological liquid. It (coat) took a lot of getting in though as it was dry at the time. It came out clean and nice smelling and fully useable.
