Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lump in neck - thyroid?
- By Whatdog [gb] Date 13.04.16 09:44 UTC
This morning I felt a lump in the neck on my 10 year old boy.  My first thought is that is the worst news possible.  We have a vet appointment at 12pm today.
Does anyone have any experience of issues with the thyroid?  I didn't think you were able to feel the gland, even if it was hyper/hypo - hence my thoughts of it being bad news.
I couldn't bear it if anything happened to him.

Don't panic until you know there is something to panic about! See what the Vet says first. Hopefully, it won't be anything serious.

Been to the vets.  He said it's not on his thyroid but is certainly not supposed to be there and doesn't feel too good.  He's taken a biopsy and we'll get the results in a week.  This will be a very long week I think.

Has the vet checked his lymph nodes?  If they are not swollen that's good, I'm assuming that's what being checked for with the location.  There is a faster check but I suspect it may not be totally reliable.  I can't for the life of me remember what it is though - I learned of it when my old boy went down with lymphoma and had to be checked quickly, as he had a seriously aggressive form of it.  Unfortunately it's not written in his notes.

I will just add, I've not known another dog go so fast to this, and Remy was a dobermann too - they are prone to lymphoma.  So don't let my experience frighten you!

Thanks Nikita
I assume he checked the lymph nodes.  We talked about where it might be and what at some length but he didn't do any particular test as far as I know.
The only test was the biopsy.
In all other respects he's fine,  you wouldn't know.

First of all try not to panic.   However, I have to say I felt a significant mass in the neck of my old boy, years ago now, and had my vet check it out.  She didn't like it at all, and took a fine needle aspiration from the rear lymphs.   Sadly that came back - lymphoma.    I have to say, given his age at the time, we opted for no treatment and in all other respects he was in rude health.   And that continued for 6 months at which point I was doubting the diganosis.   Every time he twitched, I thought that was it, but in the end, he just shut down, didn't come for his supper with the others.   We took him to our vet who gave him a shot in the hope that would get him going again.   Sadly not to be and the following morning we ended it for him.   BUT he had 6 months of first-rate quality of life and he was in his 13th year at the end.

I am feeling another mass in the neck of my current hound, but then he's riddled with cysts for some reason (some are in my breed and I've never discovered why some and not others) and there's no way I'm having any more removed - we had one at the set-on of his tail taken off and another on his shoulder, but no more unless they grow.

Hopefully this will just be similar with your boy.   Cyst.

Thanks MamaBas
Having Googled lymphoma (I know, shouldn't diagnose online), none of the symptoms fit with him.
He has nothing different about him at all, apart from the lump.
I have just also looked at Mucoceles, and that seems to be more likely (I hope) as it mentions "blood tinged" when talking about the contents of biopsy - my vet said his biopsy was blood tinged.
I know I might be clutching at straws but I'm exploring all possibilities.

Don't panic too soon. My daughter's working sheepdog had a lump at the front of her neck. It was quite large but flat and so was hidden by her ruff. As she was in her teens and also the lump was close to major blood vessels in her neck the vet felt that it was best left alone. She lived another couple of years and died of something totally unrelated.

Just a quick update - I am still waiting for the biopsy results and I don't want to tempt fate, but it appears that the lump has reduced in size.
I'm thinking that maybe it might be a mucocoele.  Has anyone had any experience of these?
As it's to do with the salivary glands I'm wondering if the fact that he is always licking the kitchen floor has anything to do with it.
