Hi all

Has anyone experienced a male stud that has had blood in its semen. He is nearly 3 and is a proved stud. He seems well within himself

Any experiences would be appreciated

It would be a vet visit if it was one of my stud dogs.  Even better if you can get a sample to take with you.  I would want to know if it was perhaps a UTI or the start of something more sinister.

Is it definitely in the semen?

I agree that a vet check is DEFINITELY in order, but something possibly vaguely relevant happened to my entire male some time back.

He was oversexed for one reason or another, including our bitch being in season, and on a bit of a blanket hump session one evening I noticed a spot of blood on the floor under him. I dabbed him with tissue and there was a bit more blood.

Long story short, my vet said that occasionally when they get a bit over excited and on a hormone surge they can burst a small blood vessel in the penis which bleeds.

This was just a few drops. No problems before or since.

I'm not sure about blood in the actual semen. Blood coming from the penis of an entire dog can be prostate problems. Get him checked out then see where you can go from there.

Fairly common but needs investigated. Almost always a prostate problem.

American site because that's where the majority of reproductary medicine is carried out so ignore Brucellosis, not in the UK.

Sometimes a male will burst a small blood vessel when mating and this could be why you are seeing blood - but does it come from the bitch??   Obviously if you are concerned, have your vet take a look.

When we've had prostate problems, we usually see a rather flattened stool coming through.

I've heard recently about a male who has blood in his semen as soon as he gets excited, and the problem is that the blood kills the sperm.

I went to a a lady who scans and artificially insemminates the other week and there was blood outside her house, she said it was from a stud they were collecting sperm from, I'm sure Why that happens either?
