Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Question about re-absorption
- By kellystewart198 [gb] Date 01.04.16 22:01 UTC
Ok so sadly my bitch who was confirmed in whelp on Day 27 is now confirmed to have re-absorbed on Day 34 (from ovulation) :( she failed to conceive last year so this is very disappointing indeed.

Anyways, during the second scan (was to confirm rough headcount) the Scanner said she was literally re-absorbing as he was scanning. My question relates to what I should expect from Day 34 onwards (she is on what would be Day 36) she still looks pregnant, acts pregnant and obviously thinks she is pregnant if that makes sense. Lots of belly grooming, constantly looking for food and her mammary tissue is continuing to develop. When should I expect her "signs" to dissipate? She has been started on amoxicillin to be safe as there are some concerns of closed pyo post-reabsorption.

Any advice based on experiences?

Thanks

We had, supposedly, unconfirmed, this happen at 5 weeks with one of our bitches.   Up to then my bitch was as to be expected, getting thicker through her flanks.  But from that point in her pregnancy, she didn't get any bigger.   In the end she had 1 big bitch puppy, by C.Section.   There was however, no indication that there had been others so Im not sure whether she did reabsorb.   She wasn't the most prolific producer - 2 puppies in her first litter and the singleton in her second and final litter.   I don't do scans so wasn't able to know whether she was carrying more at some point.

I have to say even if I did scan and nothing showed up, I'd always be watching, at the due date!    We never had a pyo with any of our bitches, thankfully, but I'd be very concerned about what might be going on with your bitch, especially if she had a closed pyo.   I think, once she's past her due date, I'd get her in for a check - if she is going to have a false pregnancy, lactate etc., then she will probably need help to scatter any milk she's producing.    This is going to be distressing for her, even if there's no sign of pyo.   Might be as well in any case, to get her spayed in another couple of months.

Sorry I should have worded this better. She hasn't had  pyo and doesn't have pyo now. .just I'm reading that there are chances of closed pyo when litters are reabsorbing.

I'm going to take her to be scanned in a few days. Want to check all the fluid pockets/pup sacs have cleared up and also check that none have survived.

I'm off work anyways so will be with her at her supposed due date.

"especially if she had a closed pyo"    Sorry, I should have said 'especialy if she MIGHT have a closed pyo'.   Hope not!!
