Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / food for young injured dog

Hi. My dog broke his leg last year and is now still recovering. He has hyper extension,  (unsure of the medical term, but has severe muscle waste around the carpal joint) so can't have much exercise. My issue is that he puts weight on so easily and is already slightly overweight due to lack of exercise. I need to find a food that will give him the nutrition he needs but allows for the fact he can't exercise. He is a working sheepdog and is almost 4. Raw feeding isn't an option. Thank you so much in advance.

I have fed Burns weight control with great success.

Unfortunately you have already dismissed the best food for nutrition and weight control.

I would suggest the next best would be a grain free product. Many of the better makes are quiet expensive but because the quality is so good much less is needed for your dog.
Orijen, Acana, Millies Wolfheart,
The "Zoofast" website prices are very good and quiet a bit cheaper than many (if they have what you want in stock !)
Natures Menu make some fantastic grain free products which can come in a dry form, tinned or pouches and of course their frozen range of convenient foods.

Weight control usually depends on how much is fed at the front end, and as your exercise is very restricted less would be better, swap some kibble for some chopped fresh raw vegetables to fill the tummy.
Carrots, broccoli stalks, sprout stalks, outside cauliflower green pieces, the middle piece of cabbage leaves, are all crunchy and good for the teeth too. Out of date or wrinkly fruit will also fill the tummy. If your dog does not like the raw veg then just very lightly steam or blanch it.

HDgroom, bit off topic but I have a carpal support I bought for my collie bitch when steroids wrecked her carpal joint. Been looking for a home for it, message me if it might help you.

Thank you for the replies. I would of course love to feed raw but I just don't have the storage space for it.

Chappie has always been a good pick me up if off food. Our Labrador after being on drip for 7 days put onto this by vet after four weeks of rice/cooked Chicken.  We kept her on it always due to her digestive problems.
