Topic Dog Boards / General / Anti pedigree dog article on Guardian newspaper website

There is a very ranting article on the Guardian website with pages of comments that you might want to check out.

The letters that follow the article show hair-raising ignorance of the facts

As said what happened with that GSD judging/showing was playing right into the hands of the Antis.   After what happenes the year the Basset was d/q, it's a pity people weren't more careful.  Regardless of whether or not that dog was 'right' according to the League supporters, surely it can't be denied that she most definitely wasn't right, in the ring.   And the fact the Group judge couldn't go over her, compounded that - crippled movement apart.

I found the whole thing made very depressing reading. So many bigoted views and little attempt to put forward a balanced argument by discussing what the very many responsible breeders do.

GSDs, as many others, were bred as working dogs, it was the uk show for looks which went into the 'look of the dog' is what shows are about, resukts as outlined in the guardian,

the link below is to hitlers gsd, blondi, just look at that dogs conformations, straight back, upright, non 'cow hock' rear legs etc.

1930's gsd in germany, it looks more like a different breed!

From what I've been told the type at crufts that has caused the up roar isn't a UK type dog it's west German show lines type .

The modern german gsd is well known these days for having a lot of problems, the main reason is twofold, they are overpopulated and there are not enough breed wardens to deal with the offspring, there are around 46,000 gsds born in germany pa compared to around 1000 dobermanns the Dobe breed warden must visit the litter withing around 3or 4days and check all ancestory, dna results of both parents as well as microchip numbers of parents.
But the gsd in germany is longs since regarded as a poor breed health wise - again thats what happens when working breeds start to bred to look this & that instead of 'can it work'

I saw it on Facebook and it made me get so angry as there are many breeders out there who are trying so hard to work for the better of their breed. Yes, there are problems of exaggerated features in some breeds (GSDs, bulldogs, etc.) but that article just ruined everything the KC has been doing to promote healthy breeding.

If you watch the footage of that belgian terrorist yesterday, >at the point the cops drag him into the car<, there is a black gsd working type, the footage is short & might be on youtube, i aint looked, that black gsd type displays the same or very similar, sound, conformation characteristics that were normal for the working dogs of the breed until recent years & as seen in the abundant footage of hitlers 'Blondi'.
It maybe the one in belgium is mixed with something, maybe not, that bit of footage is probably on youtube but i dont know for sure. GSD's are only one of many breeds to end up as genetic mutations of the original working lines of the breed:roll:
