my 7 year old ex breeding miniature poodle got sick last wednesday.she stopped eating but was drinking and then started vomiting bile.she pooped a bloody poop on thursday morning and that was it.took her to vets he said starve for 12 hours then offer her bland food.he gave her anti sickness injection aswell.by friday she wouldnt eat but was still drinking and the weight was just piling off her and she was skinny.back to vets said she was bit dehydrated and put her on drip gave antibiotics.she perked up enough to go home.on saturday she still wouldnt eat nothing except a bit of tuna so thought she was getting better.she was not walking much and seemed weak but we put it down to not eating.she was going to vets on sunday morning again.i woke up at 4 am on sunday morning and found her dead.she had pooped a pile of foul smelling blood clots and brown watery poop.she also had this brown foul smelling sick round her mouth.im utterly in shock.has anyone any idea what it could of been vet doesnt but cancer was mentioned.

This is exactly why I can't stand vets - your poor dog obviously needed a scan. It probably wouldn't have made any difference to the outcome, but you would have been able to make the end more comfortable.

I am SO sorry that you have lost your little friend. I have a toy myself and I know how much they get into your heart. You must be devastated and have a huge hole in your life.
I am actually crying for you writing this as I feel your loss and pain. I truly fear the day I'm in your position as I won't be getting another.
Huge hugs to you, hopefully the pain will subside soon and you will be able to remember the good times - they are such bags of fun !

I'm so sorry that you lost her in this way. I suppose the only way to find out would be to have your vet do a postmortem. It won't bring her back but may give you closure.

So sorry for your shock-loss and she was 'too young' for sure.   I'd suspect cancer having lose one of mine, at 11, but still too soon for my bloodline.  She had been on and off food for about 6 months actually, and was losing weight.   Clearly she had some form of cancer - probably stomach.  Her symptoms were somewhat similar.  You might consider taking the 'why' further just in case she was poisoned (could she have got into rat poison?) but it won't bring her back at the end of the day.   It may give you closure, as suggested.

So sad.

i  did suspect cancer as the weight loss over a short period a week was such alot she also started loosing more hair and a foul but not sweet taste coming from her mouth (not a dental problem).im so heartbroken as it was horrible thing to find especially as her daughter was lying next to her body and cried when i took her body away luckily have other fur babies.

My sincere condolences to you. It's always hard to lose a valued member of the family,to me they are not just pets. It must have been awful for you to find her that way and to see her daughter stressed. I hope the vet finds an answer for you.

it was awful hun.it was an horrendous day.im still trying to get my head around it.unfortunetly she would of been cremated by now so i can only assume it was advanced cancer internally of some type.im just so utterly devasted she bred me some cracking pups and saved my life once when she fostered some pups.i will never forget her.her legacy lives on though her daughter is spitting image of her as a younger model!!

It's never was to lose a pet at any age, but early in life is especially hard.

Vets are damned if they do & damned if they don't when treating animals. All animals have an instinctive survival mechanism & they rarely display the symptoms of illness & then when they can no longer "hide"the fact they are ill, they go down hill fast & are usually beyond any treatment.

This is the reason Vets train for longer than Doctors & are licensed to treat humans & animals, Doctors cannot legally treat animals, they have to be far better at diagnosing than Doctors, their "normal"patients cannot tell them where it hurts etc

If she wasn't spayed perhaps it was pyometra or some similar infection.

But........ in the end it doesn't matter why does it?  Its horrible and the vets do sound a little slow off the mark but knowing that wont change a thing either.  However it was quick and she was at home surrounded by everyone that loved her and not perhaps at a vets on a drip for a day and going in the night anyway but away from you...

Nothing will make this better but the pain becomes less sharp with time and the loss more bearable - and one day you can just have the happy memories again instead.

My thoughts are with you.  Anyone who has lost a dog unexpectantly or swiftly will have thought of the whys and what ifs - its normal - but just know you did nothing wrong and loved her every minute she was with you and there can be no blame or guilt in that.

Hugs to you and yours - give your other furbabies that extra bit of loving to help heal both them and you.

So sorry to hear of your loss at such a young age.

On another forum someone posted about hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Could it have been this ?
