Hello all,

I wonder if anyone has any information on a dog having either no tear ducts or no opening of tear ducts ?

My 6 month old American Cocker has this morning been into the vets to have his tear ducts flushed as I was worried about tear staining that has got very bad, the vet tested his eyes a couple of days ago and said they needed to be flushed, he rang today to say that the dog appears to have either no opening in his lower tear ducts or actually no tear ducts and will now be referred to an opthalmic vet.

If anyone could enlighten me with their own experiences, what I'm to expect etc I'd be very grateful.

I had a dog some years ago which was not producing tears (moister) so i had to give artifical tears a few times a day, they probably gave it a name but i cant remember. I do not remember anything about ducts etc only that was a known condition, sometimes in humans, where they do not produce tears.

It does not sound the same as yours but it might be, or related in some way, beyond that i dont know anything else along those lines.

Thank you, he is producing tears from the top ducts only, not the bottom.

Imperforate puncta i have seen on the Internet...apparently it's seen in American Cockers, until I get to see the specialist next week I'm none the wiser.

I did speak to his breeder today who has obviously come across blocked tear ducts that need flushing but not dogs that either have no hole or no ducts.

I guess it's just a waiting game until Monday when I can hopefully get an appointment for possibly Tuesday.
