- By chelzeagirl [gb] Date 05.12.15 08:11 UTC
Well hello all its been a long time since I been on and I hope you are all well . The reason I am here is for some advice for my 10 yr old rottweiler who is starting becoming lame after our walks now or if he runs about to much.. he will be ok on the day but the next day after a walk he has trouble getting up and crys a little and seems to walk with one leg bent inward.. this goes away by the evening time and he seems fine but we are now cutting his walking time down as he still wants to run round like a nutter when I feel he should be taking it easy.. he is fine on short easy walks tho.. I am taking him vets wendsday but wanted to ask about glucosamine.. do any of you use this does it help in your older dogs and where you buy it from.. thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.. I have had a google but there os so much on the subject of arthritis I wanted to get first had advice from people who know.

Before you rush out and buy anything like glucosamine (and most good dog food contains this in any case), I think you should wait to see your vet - unfortunately given the breed, I've gone to this potentially being something more serious than 'just' arthritis (unless you've had this confirmed?).   I'd let my vet palpate, and if necessary x-ray before you start any supplementing.

Lots swear by glucosamine, but recent research has suggested it's not the 'cure-all' it's said to be.    It may be he has to be on something a bit stronger when, assuming this is arthritis, it flares.   It's bound to be worse during damp cold weather than in the dry warm summer days.   Exercise of course  because arthritic people need to be kept moving, but sensibly.   And you might source a dog hydrotherapy pool because this provides gentle exercise for arthritic joints.

I would keep up the exercise if it's arthritis you need to keep him moving, but keep the walks shorter but more frequent.

So if he normally gets one longer walk make it two or even three short ones.

As this is a breed prone to bone cancer I'd get him checked/x-rayed, especially if it's a specific joint that's bothering him as opposed to general stiffness.

At home make sure he doesn't' lie on cold floors or in drafts.

I would also be thinking about cruciate ligament damage which will need different treatment. Agree with brainless short ge tlewlks for bow amd vet ASAP to see what u are dealing with

Its worth making up some golden paste. Turmeric is a natural anti inflammatory and works for people and dogs for pain full, stiff joints.

We have been doing shorter walks and he seems dandy with that. It only seems to play him up like it did the other morning cos hubz took him for a longer walk up our shops and then round our park the evening before.. I was worried about him thursday morning cos he was limping leg looking side ways cried on getting up and didn't even want to go out for his morning walk we left him resting and he went into the garden all slow and soppy ( my poor baby)  then I had to go a work bloody worried all night on howehe was doing and time I got home aroind 11.30 pm he was back to his normal self and walking fine..  does what I describe sound like arthritis to you lot. I am hoping thats all it is I suffer bad pain myself in my heels knees and back. Im ok when im moving its when I stop like on my drive home from a kong shift where im running around all night I really struggle walking from my car to my front door with the pain but once I have moved about a bit I am ok.. is this what they call getting old lol.. it sucks dont it..

But the alternative is worse!

Anita, great to see you girl, I've often wondered how things are in your neck of the woods.  Won't give advice as you need to know what vet says.  Sending positive vibes and warm wishes.

Definitely try the golden paste, or even just turmeric raw.  Outstanding stuff, easily the best thing I've tried for all my dogs and it has enabled me to take two of my dogs off conventional pain meds altogether as it's so effective.
