Topic Dog Boards / Health / Panacur Horse Guard ok for dogs?
- By rabid [gb] Date 26.11.15 21:39 UTC
Is Panacur Horse Guard still ok for dogs?  http://www.vetuk.co.uk/horse-wormers-benzimidazole-horse-wormers-c-540_174_1235/panacur-equine-guard-horse-wormer-original-225ml-p-20682

I've previously bought the 10% for cattle, but I can't see that for sale now - is the Horse Guard the same?  I know it's 10% but I didn't know about the other ingredients...?

Also - anyone know how long it lasts after opening and whether it needs to be refrigerated or not?

Same strength same ingredients for all species just dosage rates vary

No the horse guard is different
You need panacur 10% - large volumes are marketed for horses, cattle, sheep and I  buy in this volume due to numbers of dogs. Long expiry date
You can buy it here http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Panacur-Liquid-10-1L/productinfo/PAN1L/?gclid=CKaOkpnVsMkCFc-6Gwod4VgC9Q

It is the same concentration datasheet for Panacur Equine Guard http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/MSD_Animal_Health/documents/S3631.html

Presentation

A 10% w/v suspension of Fenbendazole as a ready to administer oral anthelmintic for horses. 1 ml Panacur Equine Guard contains 100 mg active ingredient Fenbendazole

The 1litre large animal (including horses) PANACUR LIQUID 10% contains Fenbendazole

Small Animal 10% suspension Canine/Cat http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Panacur-for-Dogs/products/266/
is the same

My memory must be playing up was sure the horse guard contained a second active ingredient other than fenbendazole obviously wrong - will remember that for next time I need to order as I would have avioded a horse guard labeled product.

I looked it up on Noah's compendium as I wanted to compare the non-active ingredients as well as the active ones, to be sure it was ok for dogs - but it doesn't list the ingredients (other than fenbendazole).

I tried to google to find the manufacturer, so I could check the full ingredient list - but can't find what Panacur's website is or who makes it...??

MSD animal health make horse guard and panacur 10% - beginning to think the difference is that Horse Guard  is a flavoured version

There is a flavoured and unflavoured version, as I bought it once when I didn't' want to buy the litre, but to do my 6 dogs takes more than 100ml

I've bought the unflavoured version, so am assuming that is ok...?

Hello, anyone know if it still the case that the Cattle/Sheep/Horse Panacur 10% is still the same product as the dog 10% solution? Thank you!

You think Sodium methyl hydroxybenzoate and Sodium propyl hydroxybenzoate, and Sodium Methyl Parahydroxybenzoate and Sodium Propyl Parahydroxybenzoate are exactly the same?

I think that answering the op’s question would be more helpful rather than challenging others with another question.
If you feel the wormer is not appropriate please tell folk why, that way we can learn

Those are preservatives and not active ingredients. They are all equally ok and interchangeable - although they are parabens. A lot of meds have parabens in them, though.
