One of my new puppy owners had their previous puppy come to them on Purina Beta Puppy so were thinking of feeding that, this isn't a food I know particularly, is it reasonable quality? I am sure they can be pointed in a better direction if it's really bad like Bakers for example, but if it's ok then I don't want to get too authoritative!

Its a cheap food with what i can only say from looking at the ingredients not what i would want to feed a puppy. Te meat content is low and cereals high. There are far better foods out there which arent much more cost wise

Agree

Great thanks - I was starting to get that impression with my internet surfing. My own dogs eat JWB, but for some reason puppies never want to eat their puppy food, so I am going to be weaning this lot onto the Royal Canin mum & babydog, which is what my friend uses, and all her puppies are always fat and healthy looking. Hetty has been happily eating this along with all her special meals while feeding the puppies. I know people aren't keen on RC either, but they have to eat something! Hopefully it isn't too much more expensive than the Purina, otherwise any suggestions of a better food which costs roughly the same would be very welcome. :-)

Simpsons is good, and they do a sensitive Salmon + Potatoe one as well as the chicken based.
I have found it as good but better priced (especially on breeder scheme) as Arden Grange

Have a look at the breeder schemes. I was happy with arden grange with my litter

Great, thanks both, that'll give me some reasonable things to suggest to her. :-)

I have always fed my dogs Royal Canin and they do exceptionally well. When I got a new puppy who had been fed Purina Beta she was just skin and bone. She had not had any nourishment for the first few months but as soon as I fed her Royal Canin she came along in leaps and bounds.

After advice from some members here I changed my puppy to Orijen, he's only been on it for a week now and seems to really enjoy it, I'd never heard of it before but like that it doesn't have grain, colourings, etc

My Whippet came to us having been reared on Beta, and with a bag of it for ongoing use. Her breeder swore by it, but for me, much as the puppies were all doing well, it's not the best food, and once her bad was getting towards the end, I switched her to a food listing meat as the main ingredient.
I changed my puppy to Orijen,
Orijen has a good reputation with some working line dogs & owners & the dogs are self demanding, 'poor' food would show a lack of vitality with those sort of dogs.
