Hey everyone,
My bitch will be 10 days from mating on Saturday, I've spent the past week trying to get a vet that can get the canine herpes vaccine in, on time for her. They seem to not be able to get it until 2-3rd December.
Has anyone any advice? how safe is it to use that much later? should I just leave it?
I've only had 1 litter before (3 years ago) and we had the herpes vaccine done.
Thanks,

When I mated my girl, not on her last and positive attempt the vet made a mistake and gave her somethhbg else instead. Both myself and the vet called the manufacturer who confirmed that up to 4 weeks post mating is ok and wouldn't cause a problem.
Hi
The herpes vaccine is a must. You will also need the vaccine again 2 weeks before due date
Not sure why your vet has not got the vaccine??? If I was you I would look for another vet

My experience asking my vet is they need notice to order it, as they don't stock it.
I was going to try it for my last litter after a bitch missing twice following her second litter having two mummified pups, as well as live ones, but due to returning from holiday a day before the maiden bitch I was mating was going to stud, didn't have it done.
Since then the daughter (who had a litter Sept 2013) of the one that missed twice and has been spayed was mated and missed, so I will look at getting my vet to get it in for next season due end of January.
My vet normally orders it and gets it in next day?
My vet also had no problem in getting it in the next day. Could you do a search online yourself and find a supplier, talk to them, and then give the details to your vet? Seems like his drug supplier might not know what they are doing. Can't believe there's been a sudden rush on it! You could even contact the manufacturer - I think it's Merrell - but a google search will confirm.
My vet was surprised I asked for it - he said no one ever does! I did try to educate him on why it was so important.
Thanks everyone,
It seems a manufacturing issue as I've called around all the vets in my area and there's none that can get it in before the start of November.
So is the vaccine safe to give (the first dose) later than 10 days? I don't really want to risk my bitch but at the same time I know the CHV is a major risk factor.
Wow i am surprised vets don't have it or maybe i am lucky i have a really good vets close by. to me not having it is not an option as some as the other posts have suggested problems with the pups when born ie still born.

Yes it is safe as per the manufacturers speaking me me personally and also the vet, up to 4 weeks post mating is fine and then 1 week prior to due date they said to me and the vet.
If you still aren't sure then call them

Hi everyone
i plan on mating my bitch at her next season which will be April or May. I want her to have the CHV vaccine this time but my vet wont' stock the vaccine as he doesn't have many breeders use his services and there would be only one person, me, asking for it. Apparently they have to buy so many and can't buy just one dose.
Can anyone recommend a vet in the Staffordshire, Birmingham, general Midlands are that would stock this vaccine please?
Thanks in advance

I believe vets can easily get in one or two vaccines. At least - mine doesn't stock it and has already said they can get it in for me.
If your vet really can't, he can write you a prescription and you can purchase the vaccine yourself from an online pharmacy and take it to your vet to administer:

Alarm Bells with your vet, course he can. Mine didn't stock it either but said no problems when booking.
Good news you have found out now rather than in 9 weeks time when you MIGHT really need a vet who knows what they are doing.

Thanks for your replies. The response I got was from the receptionist and she said they'd had an inquiry a couple of weeks ago and the vet had said they don't do it because they have to buy so many in a batch. I have now emailed the pharmaceutical company to ask if they can advise me of a vet in the midlands area that buys it in so I can try and get it done at another surgery.
I never thought to ask for a script for it...good thinking, I'll ask for one tomorrow.
Again, thanks for your replies and if anyone does read this that knows a vet in the Midlands area, please let me know.
Enjoy the rest of your evening xxx
