Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Swab or Progesterone test?
- By bluemerlemum [gb] Date 09.11.15 15:48 UTC
So I had a progesterone test done and my bitch wasn't ready, the next time the tester did a swab instead and said she would be ready 2 days later and to mate the Thursday and the Saturday. Went on the Thursday and had a slip mating, Saturday the dog had lost interest...whilst there had another swab done this time by someone else who said my bitch wasn't ready and wouldn't be ready until Monday until Wednesday.....now I'm confused as I have 2 male dogs of my own and they aren't showing much interest in her at all.

Was the first person right? or is this second person right?

The stud owner has been amazing, the dog is proven and my bitch has had a litter before. Did we get it with the slip mating?

I've arranged to go progesterone test again tomorrow, as I've arranged to go back to stud tomorrow but don't want to if it's too late.

Sequential progesterone tests give you a clear picture of whT is happening at a physiological level - gold standard and proven effective. Swabs can get you ball park but generally only useful in early stages to I form when to start testing IME. Personally just just serum progesterone and don't bother with swabs at all
