i am trying to think of a food to feed our 12 working Gundogs with on a shoot day morning. I want to find an alternative to their dry food which they are fed daily as feeding them a bowl of dry food in the morning results in them drinking all morning from the filthiest places on the estate. Of course they are fed a good two hours before any work.

Wondering if some of the raw feeders could give me some advice...... A wet/ raw breakfast makes more sense to me as the water content will be higher and not result in the need to lap from filthy puddles before I can stop them but I am a bit concerned about the fat in raw diets and pancreatitis. I had a go at feeding raw and one of my dogs developed it a few years ago so quite nervous about it.

I know unlike humans dogs get their fuel from fats and proteins not carbs..... I'm just nervous of overdoing the fat.... Was thinking hearts? Any opinions appreciated, thankyou!

I'm quite new to raw (about 5 months) had loads of help from Fbk - BARF UK & Raw Feeding UK.
Low fat meats are Turkey, chicken, pork (cut off excess fat) also, I think venison, rabbit
Heart is very rich, probably too much for a full meal.

I feed raw

We have the working cockers and use them in the beating line 2 to 4 days per week throughout the season.
I only feed once a day, about 4pm, and I find that if I increase this feed it usually keeps their weight on ok. If I find any of the girls are loosing too much weight I will use wet green Tripe for breakfast.
This sets them up nicely for the day and their need for too much water is not a problem.

Fat in the girls diets is an important part of a raw feeding. I mince my own meats and aquire waste products from my local butchers too.
Venison and rabbit are very lean and chicken carcassas do not have much fat either.

Plucks:  Lungs are lean but unless minced our dogs do not like the spongy texture!.
(heart, liver, kidney) are all very rich, none of these would be ideal as a whole meal !

I don't know if this may have helped.

many raw feeders have dogs with pancreatic is and feeding raw and choosing lean meats has helped. The two fb groups mention a egood and I think one raw fed in UK has a file on pancreatic is. If you arnt on fb I wod suggest you look at the leaner leader meats but also remenr that dogs need fat rather than carbs so watch how things go

I've twice had the problem with dogs after feeding too much fat, and I felt so guilty.  And my dogs love fat!  I try to be sensible with it as I know they need it.

Thankyou very much for your replies...... I will check out the FB pages and I am thinking chicken carcasses would probably be a good idea on a shoot day morning. They have to start working at 7 a.m pushing back birds off the boundaries so that would be a very easy breakfast at 5 a.m.

Appreciate the help.

Wondering if some of the raw feeders could give me some advice

Im not a raw feeder recently I felt i needed to change the AM feed (appx 5/6am), around 4-6 hours prior to main exercise because of my dogs age, I thought it better to give something easy to digest & light in the stomach. I changed the am feed to brown rice & those tinned pilchards in brine >which i washed to get the brine off<.

She seems fine with it, - chicken would be an alternative but it will not paste when mixed & she might start picking it out & leave the rice, so i just stick to pilchards.
