Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / What to feed

George had gastroenteritis last week (I'll spare the details but my kitchen looked like a murder crime scene and took me 2 hours to clean ). He is fine now but lost weight that he didn't really have to lose as he is lean and fit. Am I best just feeding him as normal-he eats when he wants-or mixing in extras to increase the calories? He will put the couple of pounds back on if eating normally but it will take a while. He is not greedy and only eats when he is hungry so upping his rations wouldn't make a difference. He is running about fine and has suffered no adverse effects other than a bit of weight loss. Am I just being paranoid that my dog looks a bit skinny? If he was long haired you wouldn't be able to tell.

Did the vet give you a suggested diet/food amount guideline sheet? Our Labrador had gastroenteritis, on a drip for week almost lost her. We were advised to feed her small meals, first plain chicken/fish with pasta/rice/veg. After a month we then slowly added chappie! Our vets recommended chappie! She looked very thin but if I did give her extra it did set us back a few days! So small meals and slow build up worked for us.
Hope all goes well and George back to usual self soon.

I'm not surprised re Chappie - I've not used the dry version, but always keep a tin or two in the cupboard for if mine have a digestive upset.   It's easily digested and further, when working in a Boarding Kennel, if we ever got one in who was reluctant to eat, Chappie got them going again.

I'd be inclined to take it slow if your dog has been hit with that - we had a young one, bought in, who went down with this (had it not been known at the time, I'd have said it was Parvo) and was so sick that we had to leave him back with his breeder to get right before he could join us out in Canada.   Don't overload his digestive system.   Although he didn't have this, we had another bought in hound who came to us with Giardia.   That left his dig.system 'fragile' and we have him on Arden Grange Sensitive which is a fish and potato diet.  Although I have tried to switch him to something a little 'cheaper', which he did well on, stool-wise, but which over time, he seemed to be having a skin reaction (it was tripe and rice) so it's back to Arden Grange Sensitive.

So slow and steady would be my approach.

It was a 24 hour thing he had and didn't need extra fluids in the end. His appetite has been a bit less since. He is running about as normal so if you didn't know he had been poorly you wouldn't know if you get my drift.
He has had some wet wainwrights food and is eating his regular kibble with no adverse effects so I think I'll just keep him on his usual food and let the weight slowly come back on. I'll probably give him an odd extra scrambled egg for protein and a few extra gentle on the tum calories.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Am I best just feeding him as normal

Who said the gastro attack was anything to do with his food?? - From what you said about his weight, eating & feeding patterns everything seems (according to what you wrote) ok in that area, gastro is more often than related to something they picked up outside > conditional on everything being ok normaly & your dog was ok normaly from what you wrote.

No one did say it was to do with food; it was most likely a bug. I would presume that his insides will have been pretty irritated and tender after the output I had to clean up. That is why I wondered if people had any ideas how to gradually increase the weight he lost or keep his rations as normal. I didn't want to upset an already disrupted digestive tract further by bombarding it with too much food.
He is completely fine now and I have no fears that the weight will gradually reappear. I just didn't want to do it fast and have a repeat 'explosion'.
