Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Fussy eater

My 11 month show cocker dog has always been a fussy eater, I have tried many different brands and he finally settled on natures harvest mixed with royal canin kibble and was doing well on it but has now gone back to his old tricks of sniffing his bowl and walking away, he will go for days not touching his food and I'm lost as to what to do, the only treats he gets through the day is a dental chew as I thought he might of been holding out for his treats but stopping his treats has made no difference, I have also tried feeding him at different times, in a different bowl and in a different room but am now really out of ideas for getting him to want to eat, any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance x

First off, cut the treats.  The dental chew is full of fat.

Make food time exciting put his food in a food ball, empty plastic bottle, empty egg containers, things he can knock around to get a reward of food. My boy will ignore a plate of food but really loves working for his food in puzzle toys.

How many feeds per day are you giving him at 11 months.
By this age my cockers are ready to take just one feed per day and hold very good condition.
Never leave food around, if it has not been eaten within 15 minutes take it away completely!
Stop all treats, the dental chews are normally based on wheat, along with any fat content they add to a daily food ration. (raw bones are by far the best soloution for healthy teeth and gums! )

Could you ever consider using raw meat, many pet stores now stock this in their freezers. (Natures Menu) does fantastic frozen complete diet nuggets.

My American Cocker of the same age is exactly the same, I also feed her Natures Harvest but mixed with Fish4Dogs which is what I really want to get her on. She is an absolute nightmare. The only time she improved was when I had to work away for a week and so she stayed with a dog sitter who was looking after 2 others. Surprising how quickly she realised the premise of eat now or lose it. But she soon reverted once home. So I agree I will cut down to two feeds a day and remove food after 15 mins if not eaten

That's a good idea about the puzzle toys, I used those with my other 2 so don't know why I didn't think of that for him.

When he was eating he was just on one feed a day but if he doesn't eat his morning meal I will pick it up and not give him anything all day then try him with another feed in the evening which he usually just nibbles at, he's terrible when he's like this it drives me crazy I don't know how he survives on what he eats
