I'm picking up my new car tomorrow, a Peugeot 308sw. I've bought it specifically to fit a car crate/box in the boot. I'm looking at two options so far - a Trixie crate which is flat pack and fairly cheap at around £125.

The other option, which I'm leaning towards, is a Transk9 box which is significantly more at £325 + around £48 for a courier.

Does anyone have either of these crates - would you recommend either of them?

My main concerns are something solid-sided to contain the dirt and hair! I don't want anything mesh-sided and I've ruled out lintran as the tops aren't solid and Nando loves a good shake.

Have you looked on Agilitynet Flea market? There are often second hand made to measure crates and boxes on there.

Had a look but nothing suitable unfortunately and need it sooner rather than later!

Another thing to consider is insurance. You may have already seen information that is doing the rounds about insurance companies not covering vehicles with crates. A friend decided to call her insurance company, Churchill, this week and was told her van was not covered as her crates were not fitted professionally (her husband had made them to specifically fit their new van).

Lintran are brilliant and the tops ARE solid. Trans K9 are good also. :)

The Lintran I've seen for this car has a wire roof. I've asked about it with my car insurance who have said that as long as it's not attached and can slide in and out its not counted as a modification.

I have crates that have mesh sides as I worry about the airflow in solid crates when travelling in hot weather. One of my dogs is a swamp monster and always shakes when he gets back in the car - even though he also shakes on command when exiting whatever vile liquid he has managed to immerse himself in during his walk. I put a towel over the crate when he first gets into it so that all the splatters are contained and it can be removed once his urge to redecorate the interior of my car has passed. In the winter I leave it over the car crate until we are home but in the summer I can remove it so there is maximum airflow around the crate.

I was very relieved to have mesh sides to my crates when stuck in a traffic jam on a motorway several years ago on the hottest day of the year where we didn't move at all for several hours.

I have a TransK9 and it is excellent. Very sturdy, has vents all round and on its mat does not shift. The firm was good to deal withh too. Have you looked on the site, they might have a trade in to suit.

No trade-ins available at the moment that suit, but today I bought myself the cheaper crate and next pay-day I'm going to buy the Transk9 and a friend is going to give me some money towards the Trixie crate so win-win situation.

My old car is being sold so I needed to get it dog-free ASAP and I wasn't prepared to let Nando in the boot of my new car without a crate of some sort to contain the hair!

My new car has a window in the boot that can open so on warm days I can open that as I drive along and not having mesh sides won't matter. There's also A/C vents in the boot too - as it originally had two seats, so nice and cool.

I would be very careful about having the tailgate window open when you are driving as it may well let in exhaust fumes.

We have a transk9 in the back of our Freelander2 and it's an outstanding bit of kit. I love it. Wholeheartedly recommend.
