Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pregnant Bitch - Loss of appetite
- By Celebrity6 [gb] Date 26.05.15 09:46 UTC
My bitch is just over 7 weeks pregnant and has gone off her food - big time!.
She would normally eat everything going but now it's a real battle to get anything down!
Firstly she went off her meat /biscuits and any treats. So I tried chicken and rice, eggs, tripe, cheese. The first day she would eat them and the next she just had no interest. She even left the cat food which she normally scoffs down.
She's ok in herself, it's just the lack of nourishment which is my main concern!
Any food suggestions would be most welcome.

Sardines

cottage cheese

salmon poached in goats milk

steak mince

I know it sounds bizarre, but when I have a girl go off her food I plate it so it looks like it is for me, pretend to have a couple of mouthfuls and then offer it to her.

This is our punishment for getting her pregnant!  They do it to worry us to death.  I had one bitch that I felt sure would be skin and bone by the time that the pups arrived, but she was fine.

I always try to tempt in any way I can just as you are doing.  Hand feeding if necessary!  Remember that she could also feel uncomfortable by the way pups are lying, making her tummy feel full.

Not to worry you, but the next step comes once your bitch has whelped.  You will then look like a zombie from lack of sleep.  Oh, and did I tell you - your hair starts to turn grey.

Thanks for your feedback.

Still a bit of a battle getting her to eat.

Had a goodish day yesterday but today it's back as it was!

PS. We've had litters before so already grey!!
