I work in a place where I can bring dogs to,work...we all do...mine is an 8 month old lab puppy. She chewed another staff members designer bag ( nibbled a corner and the zip) she was understandably upset and I of course offered to get her a replacement. She hasn't  told me what the cost of the bag was...but I found a similar looking bag online and asked was that the same thing and she indicated it seemed to be...now I've got the idea the bag she paid for was much more expensive than the one I think is the same bag.
Do I buy the bag since she's indicated it was right even though it was less than she paid....or do I find out how much she paid and give her the cash? ( I have asked and no one will tell me as of this posting)

A couple of folks have said to me I should cover half the cost as she shouldn't have left the bag on the floor knowing the puppy was there and that she chews things. I was dealing with a customer and didn't know  the bag was on the floor. I had picked up another of her bags I did see but this one was under her chair covered over by a coat. Work provides us with lockers for personal items.

I'm not trying to get out of paying...but don't want to pay more than the bag is currently worth.

Cheers in advance

I'm a bit confused, is the bag you've found less expensive than the original one? If yes than surely you won't be paying more....

Regards your other query, at the end of the day you have to continue working with this person and if this incident causes friction in the work place is there a chance the option to take your dogs to work might be stopped by your employer? I would pay for a replacement bag and settle at that. Yes, she left her bag where your puppy could get to it but you knew your puppy chewed.

Not,really sure how much she paid for the original. She discussed it with other people and not me and when I asked the other folks they won't say...so I assume it was considerably more. I found one on Harrods website and showed her the photo and she thought it was the one...but still not sure.
It is unlikely the dogs will be banned as a result of this( I work in a dogs home)The work mate also knew the puppy was chewing...and still left two bags on the floor...I spotted the one but not the other under the chair.
The one rule that has been stated more than once...regardless of a dog currently being in the room or not ...never leave a bag ( or shoes etc) on the floor....if a dog comes in it is at risk of being chewed of piddled on..
Cheers

Regardless of whether the bag should have been on the floor or not I would replace it if my dog chewed it. Buy the one she said looks the same, doesn't matter if it's now less than she paid, she's had some use out of it ;)

It all seems very vague and you've assumed it must be more expensive, are you sure it wasn't a copy off the market? I think you need to sit her down and have a proper conversation with her, possibly ask to see a receipt to confirm the value of the bag before spending anything. I am somewhat cynical and your description sounds like she's trying to blag a better bag out of you by being vague and letting you jump to conclusions. I could easily be taken in as I know b...... all about designer bags, unless you know her well enough to know she wouldn't do that.

I think you're making a simple thing complicated, perhaps subconsciously because you don't want to have to give her the money for the bag.

Just say to her "you still haven't told me how much money I owe you for the bag. How much do I owe you?"

Whatever amount she says, you give her, unless you have very good reason to believe that she is lying. You give her cash, don't buy her a new bag.

If she doesn't answer the question, you don't do anything. Your responsibility is discharged by offering to pay. And by paying if she tells you how much.

This bag you pup has chewed could be a cheap knock off. How upset was she because I would be very very upset if it were a true designed bag costing hundreds or thousands. Is she really likely to have such an expensive bag? Why Harrods to look for it, probably the most expensive place to buy anything in the UK too.

I too would be asking her where she got the bag from and how much it cost, she may well say don't worry about it, she may ask for a small amount or she may say it cost her £20...

Don't go buying anything designer until she's actually confirmed the exact cost and bag to you..
You know what bag you have if it is a true designer bag and if needs be get it out and look online to confirm style..

If true designer then you can easily go to an American online store and buy it there for cheaper too, a legit online store!

now I've got the idea the bag she paid for was much more expensive than the one I think is the same bag.

I agree you are making this much too complicated and perhaps assuming too much.

Every designer bag has its designer label/attachment on it, all you do is look up the designer and match the bag, they all look different not hard to match it. If you have matched the same design to the make you've got the bag end of.

However, I would also err on the side of caution, there are many, many, many fake designer bags around, they are everywhere, only on close inspection can they often be spotted. This could well be a bag under £40.

I would not be putting my £400 designer bag on the floor or take it into work where I worked with dogs, but I guess not everyone is me.

I would also price check Debenhams, John Lewis, House of Frazer for price checks too, very often there are sales on, so don't miss out, she won't worry what you pay for the bag just that it is the same.

In future when you take the puppy, I would call out to the whole office that the pup is here so could everyone pick up their valuables.

Stop worrying, it is up to her to tell you the bag is wrong, or more expensive, if she says nothing, then not much you can do, just buy the bag and hold your head up, you've done the right thing.

Best advice so far.  I would 100% say this would be the best way forward.  If she doesn't answer the question you just forget about it.

I have no problem giving her the money or a new bag....but I don't want to pay above the odds either.
It was a Longchamp Le Pilage large handbag...I know nothing of these things...having 7 dogs I've better things to spend money on..lol..
I looked at the bag to see what kind it was before I told her the pup had chewed it.

I've asked her mum how much the bag was and she says do t worry about it as it was an accident....I have another friend going to London on Tuesday says she would see if they have it on sale in store..

Thanks for the replies ladies..

If the mother has said don't worry about it and the girl is not being very forthcoming then I wouldn't go out and buy one personally. I'd ask the girl again and see what she says re money and if she brushes it off then don't give her anything. Working in the environment you do then she was silly to leave it about and as the mum has said it was an accident.

Just done a very quick google and loads of those bags came up at less than £70 so at least you are not going to have to spend a huge amount of cash replacing it. The ones I saw are glorified shopping bags lol.

I did a quick check on Ebay to get my head round how much this bag might have cost.   Bearing in mind it presumably wasn't brand new, and also the fact that although some handbags cost A LOT, some on Ebay are FAKES.

I'd not take what her mother says as meaning much - that bag might have been important to her daughter.   No, perhaps she shouldn't have left it lying on the floor, BUT you'd not expect to have a puppy loose in most work-places!   The owner is responsible for what the dog gets up to, so to avoid this becoming an ongoing issue, I'd think I'd try to find out what a replacement bag will cost, and give her the money.   'Case closed'.

Add -   I just read on and gather where you work is a Dogs' Home.   Fair enough - she should have known better than leave stuff lying on the floor, maybe.   It still happened, and to me, you are still responsible for damaged caused by your pup.

If I'd brought a designer bag and worked in a dogs home I wouldn't take it to work! You have asked her directly re cost and no confirmation of price. You also asked her mum and again no confirmation of true identity and a don't worry about it comment. I myself from this would hazard a guess it's a copy and purchase said copy! Cash can be quite difficult to discuss and hand over without causing offence especially to a work colleague! A lovely wrapped bag better idea.
