Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Correct dietry requirements for a 6month old pointer pup
- By SCS [fr] Date 18.05.15 14:12 UTC
Hi to everyone, this is my first time on the forum and I need some advice regarding a 6 month old pointer, he's a french " Braque ", midi pyrenee, the smaller of the two and I wanted to ask about dried food, what is the correct amount to be feeding daily, also would that be three times daily due to his age, or twice daily, morning and night.

Thanks in advance, SCS

Probably still three times perday.amounts vary according to the kibble you are feeding it should be written on the bag. If he doesn't want to eat three meals reduce to Twp but keep am eye on how he looks as well

What a lovely breed, never seen them in UK, only seen the breed when at completions in Europe.
I have GSP and imagine  they are similar. I find I need to feed 1o- 20% more than feeding guides on most foods and feed three meals until at least 10 -12 mths or they can run up light as juveniles. I feed a mid range three star food and find these suit my GSP better than the 80:20 premium brands where feed quantities are lower, my dogs were always hungry. they were also too light in condition IMO  ( low body fat so no reserves if injured or unwell ) when I Increased the feed rate  they got  loose bowels.

Some GSP can be a bit anorexic ( never had one myself all mine make labs look casual around food ) if the breed is prone to this the 80:20 foods may be ok as extra calories / gram

Thanks klb, I appreciate the reply. The Braque & GSP are very similar are'nt they ! The advice you have given is good and you are right as he is eating more than the guide from the food manufacturer. I feed him " Kana " its a dried food available here in France made with fresh freeze dried meats, 40% chicken, 35% rice with both high protein and fat content. I have seen Braques for sale in the UK this year so keep a look out if you are competing you will come across one sooner or later. What level do you compete at, and is it at open field trials ?

Thanks, Steve.

We compete in show ring in UK and in Europe, work the dogs on our small syndicate  shoot ( all HPR no spaniels or labs ). The OH has field trailed in Uk but no longer has the drive to do so. Never competed in european style trials but went out to major GSP test in Gemany last October ( kleemann ) and hope to be in Austria in 2016.
Rory Major had my young boy in for training and I think he has trained a couple of braques in UK.
