Topic Dog Boards / General / 2 year old bitch and 8 week old bitch

I won't go into the story but I am acquiring an 8 week old and I already have a 2 year old.  I will only have the 8 week old during the day during the week.  All your advice will be definitely welcome.

Can you elaborate what is it that concerns you?
- By Bunnyfluff Date 17.05.15 06:28 UTC
Maybe my 2 year old might get worried.  She is lively.  I will not leave either of them alone together but with all good intentions I could take my attention away.

Do you have a pen you could put the 8 week in while you are busy doing things and also the other one can see it but not get to it.

What are you trying to say? ! ! !! ! ?#*!*

I have 3 different size cages which I intend to use.  I originally asked the question in case anyone reading this thought "I had the same situation some years back and this is my story".   Or how a breeder would advise one of their buyers.

Make sure pup has plenty to do (kongs, chews etc), give her plenty of rest breaks so she doesn't get into that horrid wired-because-I'm-overtired state, watch her so she can't badger your adult and if you can't watch her then keep them separate.  You'll be fine :)

Dogs are social creatures, so unless your older girl is very anti social then she ought to get on with a pup fine as long as she has an escape route or place the pup can't get to.

She may act miffed for a few weeks and many adult dogs don't like pups when they are still at the looking for the milkbar stage, and are fine/accepting once they reach around 12 weeks.

Again breed may play a part as some breeds are very dominant and don't take well to their own sex, but that should not be an issue while the younger is a pup.  If socialisation of the adult around other dogs, especially pups (was taken away from litter too early) then more care needs to be taken, especially fi the breed is one of high prey drive..

My older dog was 15 months when introduced an 8 week old bitch pup to her, same breed. She was somewhat put out at first, have some photos of her in her bed with the pup cutely snuggled up beside her, but the fed up look on her face was classic. She told the pup off a couple of times over food, but they were fine after a few weeks and became life long buddies.

We didn't leave them alone together at night or when we went out and I spent much of my time watching them together, don't do much else when there is a new pup in the house.

Just make sure the older dog is able to get away from the pup whenever she needs to especially if the puppy won't leave her alone, you need to be the one to separate them if things get too much, don't leave it to your girl to have to lay down the law all the time.

What breed is it? & are they both the same breed?

I have a multi dog household and I wouldn't have a problem with an unknown pup.  The dogs that don't like youngsters would soon shift, and the ones that do - would be fine.  I would just crate (for short periods) when I couldn't keep a close eye.

I remember when introducing a Beardie pup, my 2 year old Beardie got on the settee out of the way.  I have loads of dogs and don't have problems that can't be solved.

I have a multi dog household too and like Jean never have a problem either bringing in a new pup or having friends pups visiting. I don't crate but until they are fully house-trained new pup is confined to kitchen when I'm not there. When I brought my last pup in I done what I do every time, plonked pup down in the middle of the garden and let the dogs out. They all examine baby, depending on the pups reactions maybe tell it off, maybe play, then they all come back in the house together as one family :)

Thank you for your interesting replies.   It would seem I must not let the puppy pester the older dog.  I was imagining it would be the other way round.  They are not the same breed but the growth rate is roughly the same and they will be the same size when an adult.   The puppy will go home for the nights, weekends and holidays.

Ah ok you are doing day care for the puppy?
- By Bunnyfluff Date 18.05.15 11:04 UTC
Yes.   Day care.   That is surely going to take most of my time.   Could be worse, it could be a baby.   I'm happier with dogs.

Well today I find out if it's 1 baby or 2 babies that I'll be expected to daycare for in  11 months!, think the second puppy a better option sooner but I'll be advised I'm being mean!
