Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / feeding underweight puppy

Hi all. I have "taken in" for want of a better expression a 6 week old SBT puppy. The people who breed her had no clue and entire litter were underweight and only had access to dry (unsoaked) kibble and water. They went from suckling to dry food.
Mum had been removed from pups entirely and so they gave the pups away. Very sad situation but she is here with me now so.....
I am feeding her 6 small meals of Oregin small puppy daily. Well soaked. Also she has approx 300ml of puppy formula daily (lapped from a bowl).
She has gained 400g since Friday last week and is lively.
I wormed her with drontal suspension.
I have experience with large breed pups so was hoping someone with experience of SBTs or smaller breeds could advise me if Origen is the best food to feed her to ensure a nice weight gain? she is very tiny weighing 1.9kg today.
I wean my pups onto Origen and feed it to my adults as well (large breed).
Perhaps there is a better food for an under weight pup?

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I have never weaned onto dry kibble only but I would say Orijen is probably the best of the best, little and often as you are doing. A lovely food with no difficult grains to digest!
At this stage I would not re introduce any milky or sloppy feeds as solid food is what your puppy should be on by now.

However, I am a raw feeder!
The last puppy that I bought in was very skinny and had been reared on a kibble diet only, as soon as I got her I added raw meat to her diet and changed her over in 2 days to an all raw diet. Her condition improved rapidly and after 1 week she looked like a different pup!
Maybe you could offer a little raw meat each day to help her digestive system working nicely with some nice healthy enzymes.
Stay with the kibble that you are using, dont try loads of different ones, it will only lead to upset tummy problems.
And before anyone says that you can't feed kibble and meat togeather, you can and with no problems either.

Good luck.

Thanks wait ok. I part feed my other dogs kibble and raw. Morning feed kibble and then afternoon is raw, they love it.
Didn't want to start the little one just yet as I am scared of her becoming loose (it's taken 4 days to firm her up).
But I will try her with a little ground beef this evening. I have a freezer full of minced tripe etc so will make a start on her raw feeding.
Good to hear someone else's perspective sometimes. Thanks again
Oh and will finish her on the puppy milk this evening.  I know my own breed will be fully weaned from mum by 6 weeks I just wasn't sure whether smaller breeds were the same.
