My bitch is just coming up to 40 days pregnant, and today has had some bad diarrhea in her kennel. Otherwise has been fine, and had a good walk this morning and all seems fine. I was planning on not feeding her tonight, but also perhaps giving her some Pro Kolin? I am fairly sure this is safe to give to pregnant bitches? Has anyone else done this? There don't seem to be any contraindications listed for the product, and I have emailed Protexin to just make sure, but not received a response from them.
Would be grateful for any reassurance at this stage. Thanks.
Hi,
Yes, I have used prokolin and protexin sachets on a pregnant bitch. I did ring protexin to check it was safe and it was.
This bitch went on to have a healthy litter of 12
Good luck...hope her tum settles soon,
Ali
Thank you. I am really worried about her today as she has such bad diarrhoea. I've given her two doses of Pro Kolin and fasted her tonight, so will see how she is in the morning. I am obviously worried about the pups....
If I remember right I think our bitch was around the 6 week mark when hers started....it was really runny liquid diarrhoea. I had to delay her worming and food increase by a few days. Was about a week until she was fully back to normal. No idea what it was as watch them very carefully when pregnant and she had eaten nothing yuk and our other 10 dogs were fine.....sure pups will be fine, they will take what they need from her and you might just need to help her catch up a bit of weight once she settles.
Thanks Bucksmum, that's reassuring to hear. I didn't hear anything back from Protexin, but finished the Prokolin I had, and spoke to nice woman at Yumpro, who do similar pre-biotic product, and she confirmed all fine to give to pregnant bitch. So given her a couple of these tablets, and fed a little scrambled egg and water (she's ravenous!!). And now just on hourly 'poo watch'. Yes, it's totally liquid. All my other young dogs are fine (but I have a very old bitch who is also squitty but not as bad, so maybe same thing for her, and these two just couldn't fight it off in their 'vulnerable' states?). Will keep an eye, and if not significant improvement by tomorrow, will take to vet, although not sure what they will do other than antibiotics now... She is bright enough in herself and I am making sure she remains hydrated.
Just to feed back, Protexin came back to me and confirmed their product is safe, and stays in the gut so no adverse affects on pregnancy.
The two Yumpro tablets must have helped work some magic as that was it, no more squits that day. Small amounts of food. And nice and firm this morning again :)
Great news! Don't worry about the pups.....when my bitch had exactly the same she went on to have the biggest litter we have ever had, all survived and a good size.
Good luck ...our girls must be due about the same time!
Ali
I am a bit worried, as she doesn't look any larger this last week, but I am hoping we are now past the danger time of when she could re-absorb. I think they will be born about 2-5 June all going well.
Thanks for your input.
My bitch is 40 days on Sunday and if you look at her from above she hardly looks pregnant...she is filling out from underneath. I know she is in pup as I had her scanned on Tuesday due to her having a small bleed.Six pups seen but he was pretty sure there were more.
If she's not been eating a lot she's probably just lost some covering fat and will look a bit smaller, she will also have got a bit dehydrated which again will make her drop weight.....you will probably see a change almost overnight just past 6 weeks especially if she is eating normally again.
I hope so. It's her third litter so I imagine she will be the size of a house by the end! She had 8 and 9 before, and the scan this time showed at least 7, so fingers crossed. I will gradually start feeding her up a bit, as she is pretty lean (working gundog).
Good luck with yours too. Exciting times.
