Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Is my medium size bitch going to whelp to early?
- By Lyndahall [gb] Date 06.05.15 18:25 UTC
Hello
My girl is 51 days from her first matting, so today I thought I should start to take her temperature to look out for her drop,
With the last litter she dropped then had her large (10) litter with in 24 hours, she also had them a week early, but they where very big strong pups.
Today her first temp was 37.4 I was a little shocked her normal is around 38, so I have checked 3 times today, 2nd 37.3 & just now 7pm 37.
I've never had a bitch start off with there temperature this low at 51 day.
Had anyone else?
Should I worry about the pups coming early?
Does anyone else's bitches with large litter come early?
Thank you Lynda

My bitches have all been around 37.5 when I have taken their temperature pre-whelping/pre-drop and then they have dropped to 36.5 or thereabouts.  At least a 1 degree drop.  So, no those temperatures wouldn't really concern me at this stage.

I don't consider temperature taking reliable enough.  And, to be fair, if you kept sticking something up my backside when I was heavily pregnant I would soon get fed up.

Yes, she is far too early to consider live whelps.

It is normal for the temperature to fluctuate but I think you'd need to see a drop of 36.5 or below to suspect imminent whelping. Just keep an eye that she is feeling well in herself but I wouldn't worry too much.
