Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Puppy gulping food and throwing it up what can I do?

Hi All

I feed my 5 month old Dachsie Acana Puppy & Junior dry dog food.  After he eats he very often brings it up again.  The pieces of kibble are always complete.

When he eats he eats really really fast and he gulps his food down he does not chew it.

I have tried getting him to eat slower by feeding him a little at a time in his bowl, by hand feeding him a bit at a time and lastly by putting his food in a flat tray so it is harder for him to pick up.

He still manages to eat very fast and very often brings it up.

I know that if a dog eats fast they can take in too much air causing them to bring it up again but I don't know how to slow his feeding down.

I am also wondering if at 5 months as his adult teeth are nearly through I should be switching him from Acana Puppy & Junior to the Adult food.

I would be so grateful for some advice.

Thanks

Could you try casting it over your kitchen floor a handful at the time, so that he can't grab huge mouthfuls? Soaking it, might also slow him down. Failing that you can also buy special bowls that actually help to slow greedy feeders down: Slow Feed Dog Bowls.

I will try casting it over the floor that's a good idea but I may take a loom at the bowls thank you I didn't realise you could get such a thing

I use a Green dog feeder as my dog inhales her food in a microsecond otherwise

Slows her down to several minutes. There is a mini version for small dogs

Also use a Kong Wobbler which has to be pawed or nosed around to get bits of kibble to fall out. Word of warning, rather noisy on a hard floor.

At 5 months of age, for a small breed, I consider it far too early to even contemplate feeding adult food.  But then, I feed puppy up to a year of age and I have never had a reason to change my decision.

Thanks :-)
I have put a little egg cup container in his regular dog bowl and he has to eat around it and it really works.
