Hi,  My Bitch is on her 2nd day post whelp.  All the pups are a good weight and feeding constantly.  My Bitch is drinking goat's milk fine which I know can help with milk production, but she doesn't seem to have much of an appetite.  She seems to be quite tired because the pups aren't giving her a minute. I've read that she should be eating about 3 times her normal daily amount.  She is normally on a raw diet but is now turning her nose up to that.  She has been eating cooked chicken, and that's about all I can get her to eat.  She liked cottage cheese early in pregnancy but has gone off that as well now.  What else can I give her to tempt her and bulk her up with protein. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Mine get about 4 times their normal dry rations soaked so they can hardly hold any more water. 

This I hold under their noses so they don't have to leave pups at all.

If she wasn't off her food before whelping then this will normally work well.

In the case of a bitch who was eating poorly (hadn't eaten at all for two days even when I steamed salmon)  I went to Wilkinsons and got a tray of their cheap yellow label cat an dog food (as it didn't list cereal) and she ate 4 tins of that a day, (liked the cat food best) and her poo stank, but it got her eating, next day she got three tins and one ration of usual food and so on until I was just giving a spoonful of the vile smelling stuff, and she was eating the soaked kibble.

She will still be tired an sore from the C section, and of course nursing takes it out of them, which is why we support them as much as possible, and are at their beck and call ;)

Mine often hate the thought of food but if you 'post' a couple of mouthfuls down they suddenly get the urge back again...
It's like they've temporarily lost the urge but will get stimulated back to an appetite.

If they eat all placentas I find mine don't feel hungry for a couple of days after whelping. I just keep tempting well soaked food by hand and their appetite soon picks up.

She did eat all the placentas.  She seems to be just eating cooked chicken at the moment and boiled eggs. She doesn't look bad in herself and I've just taken her and the pups for a vet check and everything is ok.  She was quite bouncy in there with her usual waggy tail so I'm pretty sure she's not feeling poorly.  SO I think I will persevere with the chicken for now and try and introduce something different in a day or so.

I have a bitch who had 12 pups yesterday. She won't eat her normal food, not even chunks of meat, but she will happily eat any amount of raw chicken wings. Several people have also suggested chicken broth for her.  I don't want to just tempt her with anything as at this stage an upset stomach is the last thing I want as she can't afford to lose weight, but there the chicken wings are ideal so I'm glad she wants them. It's one thing I find all my bitches do really well on when pregnant or nursing. I'd expect she will be back to wanting to eat more or less anything in a few days time.
